SNU buries 14 3-pointers in win over Central Oklahoma

Box Score BETHANY, Okla. — It may have taken a 100-point night for Southern Nazarene, but SNU put up a number in the win column in an impressive 100-89 victory over Central Oklahoma Saturday night.

The Crimson storm (1-2) got a combined 58 points from Quan Conner and CJ Smith as each scored a career-high 29 points. The two combined for nine of SNU's 14 3-pointers which is the second highest mark in a single game in school history. Conner went 9-for-16 from the field and 6-for-11 from 3-point range. He also added seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and was 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Smith went 6-for-9 from the field, hit all three treys he attempted and went 14-for-17 from the line. The 14 made free throws were the second most free throws hit in a single game in school history. He also had three assists, two steals and three rebounds.

"If those two play together and play like they did tonight, they can be a tough match up for teams," said SNU Head Coach Adam Bohac. "They both are tough kids and hard headed and that's what makes them good. They were able to get each other involved and didn't turn it over."

Southern Nazarene also got 27 points off of the bench with 12 coming from Francisco Hukill and 11 from Garrett Butler. Hukill also had seven rebounds and three assists.

The Storm as a team shot 48.3 percent from the field, going 29-for-60, and went 14-for-28 from 3-point range. SNU also hit 28 of its 34 attempts from the line.

"There were a lot of threes shot tonight between both teams and we hit a good percentage," said SNU Head Coach Adam Bohac. "We also hit a bunch of free throws and sometimes those things don't go together."

It was a 3-point barrage as the Storm and Bronchos (2-1) combined for 25 treys on the night. Seth Heckart scored a game-high 28 while Josh Gibbs had 24.

SNU had the first lead of the night, but that was quickly taken by UCO who used a 15-7 run to lead 19-12 early. The Storm rallied with a 10-1 run capped by a Conner three to lead 22-21, but the lead was short lived as the Bronchos answered with a 9-3 run to lead 30-24. Central Oklahoma matched its biggest lead of the half twice at 38-31 and 40-33 before a Smith three sparked an 12-0 run by SNU to make it 45-40 with 43 seconds left in the half.

SNU took a 45-42 lead into halftime, but the Bronchos went on a 10-3 run to open the second half. Neither team led by more than four until the Storm broke a 75-75 tie, the ninth tie of the game, with a pair of Smith free throws and started a 13-3 run to give SNU its biggest lead at that point at 88-78 with 2:45 to play.

The Storm stretched it out to 98-84 with 40 seconds to play to put it away and give SNU its first win of the year.

SNU will now get set to open Great American Conference play Thursday when it hosts Arkansas Tech for a 7:30 p.m. game.
