Southern Nazarene picked up its first win of the season with a shutout of Southwest Baptist

Chumpitaz posted six points, two goals and two assists, in the win.
Box Score BETHANY, Okla. — The peace can finally rest in the Southern Nazarene men's soccer team. After coming so close in a handful of matches, the Crimson Storm picked up their first win of the season in impressive fashion with a 4-0 victory over Southwest Baptist.

“It's nice having most, not all, of our defenders healthy and that helped a lot today,” said SNU Head Coach George Schroeder. “Offensively we made some adjustments and moved some players around and they've had some time to get used to that lineup and clicked on some goals today.”

Hajime Chumpitaz was all over field Thursday afternoon and had a hand in every goal scored. The junior assisted on the first goal, scored the second, assisted on the third and put home the final goal for two goals, two assists and six points total. It was the seventh time in school history that someone notched six points in a single game.

The Crimson Storm (1-9, 1-3 MIAA) got on the board first in the 18th minute when Aziz Tapsoba scored his first goal off the season on off a through ball by Chumpitaz and SNU was off and running. Southern Nazarene took a 1-0 lead into the half and extended it from there. Chumpitaz made it a 2-0 match in the 59th minute after beating the SBU keeper in a one-on-one situation. Tapsoba and Chumpitaz connected again in the 79th minute when Chumpitaz sent a pass from the left side to the middle of the box and Tapsoba drove it home for his second goal of the contest.

“We finally found a connection with some athleticism that is going to work,” said Schroeder. “We just weren't getting as many chances early in the year even though possession was great. We made those adjustments and put Aziz forward and with his skills and speed it has started to show results. Hopefully it will pay off more than just this game.”

Chumpitaz put the finishing touches on the match when he took a pass from Josh Thomas and drilled home his fifth goal of the season from the left side in the box and bent it around the keeper to the right side of the goal.

Blake Anderson stopped all six shots put on goal, of the 11 SBU took, while SNU pounded the Bearcats' goal with 35 shots and 14 being on goal. It was also the senior's first shutout of the season.

“Blake had been a bit frustrated and sore this year,” said Schroeder. “He's done a great job and we finally backed him up tonight after he's backed the rest up so much this year. To get the shutout along with the win is great for him.”

The Crimson Storm will now get set to host No. 21 Lindenwood (Mo.), Saturday, at 3 p.m.
