MOBILE, Ala. — The 2012 season came to a close for No. 10 Southern Nazarene as SNU fell 5-0 to No. 7 Brenau (Ga.), 5-0, in the second round of the NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship.
The Crimson Storm (13-6) fell behind early in doubles, losing all three matches.
Hilary Galbraith and
Kimberly Wiedemann went down 8-0 first at No. 3 before both
Deisi Bolivar and
Karina Kotova, at No. 1, and
Masha Andrianova and
Marina Shipilova, at No. 2, both lost 8-3. It was the first loss at No. 2 doubles for Andrianova and Shipilova who were 14-0 heading into today's match.
The Tigers then needed just two singles matches to clinch it and got those wins at No. 5 and six singles as Wiedemann lost 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 and
Allison White fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. Andrianova was behind 6-2, 2-1 at No. 1 and
Deisi Bolivar was up a set after winning the first 6-4. Shipilova trailed 6-3, 1-0 and Kotova had dropped the first set 6-2 before the match was called.
The loss also ends the program's association with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) as SNU will now prepare to play in the Great American Conference as it pursues membership in NCAA Division II.
