Durrty Win

Marsha Durr hit the biggest three of her career to secure a win over Northwestern

It was Durr's first game-winning trey of her SNU career.
Box Score BETHANY, Okla. — Marsha Durr was no stranger to game-winning shots growing up in Plano, Texas, but the junior guard had not had many chances to the be the hero at Southern Nazarene. That changed Saturday afternoon with a game-winning 3-pointer with three seconds left to lift No. 15 SNU to a 64-63 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State.

The Crimson Storm (11-4, 5-2 SAC) trailed 63-59 with 1:20 left to play after SNU nearly led from start to finish. Oumoul Thiam got a break away layup with 23 seconds left to make it 63-61 and then the Lady Rangers turned it over on the inbound pass. The Crimson Storm got the ball back with about 15 seconds left and Thiam had a shot bounce off the front of the rim into the hands of Logan Martin. The senior dribbled out to the left wing and skipped a pass to Durr who drained her second trey on the day.

“I knew when Logan let go of the pass after getting the rebound that it was going to have to be catch and shoot,” said Durr. “It felt good when it left my hands and I knew it was going down. I knew we had to get back on defense, but I was definitely celebrating inside.”

Northwestern had a chance with two seconds left, but couldn't get a shot off as SNU secured its third straight win.

“We didn't play well tonight, but we found a way to win against a solid opponent,” said SNU Head Coach Lori Carter. “We didn't panic in that last minute after losing lead and then we got some stops and stuck with it. Our kids kind of free lanced on that last play. We were trying to get Logan off a screen, but they (NOSU) read the play. From there it was a bit of a blur until Marsha hit that three and was just as cool as can be taking it.”

Thiam had a game-high 18 points, going 6-for-11 from the field and 4-for-4 at the line. Martin moved into the top 10 on SNU's all-time scoring list as she notched her second double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Martin moved past JoAnna Bailey (1990-94) as she now stands at 1,573 career points. Annie Kassongo added eight points and six rebounds while Abbey Marra had six points and eight rebounds.

Despite being held to just 34.4 percent from the field, SNU shot over 70 percent from the charity stripe for the fourth straight game, going 15-for-17. SNU also scored 14 points off of 14 offensive rebounds as it out rebounded the Lady Rangers 41-39.

The Crimson Storm led by as much as seven in the first half at 20-13 and took a 34-28 lead into the half. Northwestern scored the first six points of the second half to tie it at 34, but the Storm answered with an 8-2 run capped by a Martin trey. The Lady Rangers closed it to within two, four different times and were down 59-55 with 5:08 left to play.

Audrey Richmond then brought Northwestern within one with a 3-pointer before Renee Golliday gave the Lady Rangers their first lead since the first point of the game. LaParis Newsom completed the 8-0 run with a traditional 3-point play to give Northwestern a 63-59 lead with 1:20 to play.

The Crimson Storm now get set to hit the road when they travel to Saint Gregory's, Thursday, for a 6 p.m. SAC contest.
