OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — No. 16 Southern Nazarene survived a late surge from Oklahoma Christian, and held off OC in the final stretch to score a 68-65 win at the Eagles' Nest.
The Crimson Storm (11-3, 4-2 SAC) led by as much as 14 in the second half and were up 58-44 with 7:48 left when Oklahoma Christian began to chisel away at the lead. The Storm led 66-54 with 3:09 remaining and got its final two points on a pair of Daniel White free throws to lead 68-59 with 2:07 on the clock.
Eric Randall brought the Eagles within seven at 68-61 before Will Reinke got bucket in the paint to make it 68-63. After an SNU turnover, Willie Harper got OC to within one possession with just 52 seconds left at 68-65. Aaron Jones had a chance to put it away with 11 seconds left, but missed the front end of a one-and-one, and Randall heaved a last second trey that missed its mark and gave SNU its second straight win.
Jon West scored a game-high 16 points and added six rebounds and two steals. West was 5-for-7 from the field and hit his only 3-pointer he took. The senior was also a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Horace McGloster and Tyrone Lyons each chipped in with 13 points as McGloster added seven rebounds while Lyons had three. Daniel White went 4-for-6 from the field, scoring 11 points and notched five rebounds as well.
SNU shot 52.3 percent (25-for-47) from the field, going over 50 percent for the second straight game, which was its saving grace after nearly doubling OCs turnovers. The Storm turned the ball over 19 times compared to just 10 by the Eagles. OC though converted just seven points off of SNU's miscues. SNU also out rebounded OC 30-25.
OC Shot 48.1 percent from the field and were 17-for-34 in the second half.
SNU trailed just a few times early, and were down 9-7 in the first six minutes of the game when Ryan Aaron sparked a 10-0 run with a trey and SNU never trailed again. The Storm took its biggest lead of the first half at 35-22 on a Jones bucket before taking a 35-26 lead at the half.
OC cut it to 43-41 early in the second half, but Lyons ignited a 15-3 run as SNU led 58-44 before the Eagles began to close the gap late.
The Crimson Storm now get set to host Northwestern Oklahoma State, Saturday, at 5 p.m.
