Spoiled Opening Night

No. 24 Baker took away any hopes of an win on the first day of play

Box Score

BETHANY — With just 2:17 left on the clock Baker's Nick Aguilar drilled home a dagger from the right side off a quick corner kick to spoil Southern Nazarene's season opener, 2-1.

The 24th-ranked Wildcats (1-0) came out from the opening kickoff and began to pound Crimson Storm (0-1) keeper, Kenton Farris, early and often. Baker took seven shots and put four of those on goal in the first half and did even more damage in the second half with 10 shots, six on goal, in the second.

Tom Lowndes had a hand in both Wildcat goals by scoring one and assisting on another for three points. He first broke the scoreless tie in the 56th minute when he ripped a free kick from 25 yards out to the bottom right side of the goal.

Blake Rodgers then tied the match at 1-1 when he found the back of the net from the right side off an Eric Ouedraogo assist in the 75th minute, but it was Lowndes that served up a perfect pass to Aguilar who laced the game-winner.

Both teams had plenty of opportunities to find the back of the net with several shots ripped right at the goal. SNU, on a handful of occasions, was inside the box and either had shots deflected or the Wildcats' keeper, Michael Sheridan, picked up the save.

Seridan posted six saves on the day while Farris notched eight. Baker outshot SNU 17-11 and had 10 of those on goals compared to seven by the Crimson Storm.

SNU is back in action tomorrow at 3 p.m. when they host St. Thomas (Texas) at Wanda Rhodes Soccer Complex at 3 p.m.
