SHAWNEE — The score may show a 3-0 loss for Southern Nazarene to Oklahoma Baptist, but the Crimson Storm made 16th-ranked Bison work a bit.
The Crimson Storm (12-8, 2-2 SAC) got another double-double out of Taryn Steele who dished out 18 assists and posted 15 digs. Steele also notched six kills. Sarah Groesbeck matched Steele in digs while Ellen Martin notched 10. Danielle Hampton and Morgan Loewen led the way with eight kills each. Angela Evans also posted three blocks.
Rupia Inck led the way for the Bison with 21 kills and 12 digs.
SNU led late in the first set at 21-20, but an error and two kills by Inck put OBU up 23-21. Steele ripped a kill to get back within one, but two straight service errors handed the set over to the Bison. It was all OBU in the second set as it climbed out to an early 14-4 lead. SNU cut the lead to four at 16-12 with an 8-2 run, but the Bison put the Crimson Storm away late to take a 2-0 match lead.
In the final set, neither team led by more than two until OBU used a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead. SNU closed it to 11-10 and got within one six more times until OBU stretched the lead back out to 24-20. Back-to-back kills by Hampton and Martin combined with an OBU error again made it a one-point set at 24-23, but Inck closed the night with another kill.
SNU will now take on St. Mary (Kan.) and Bethel (Kan.) in North Newton, Kan., Saturday at 2 and 4 p.m. before returning home to host St. Gregory's, Monday at 7 p.m.
