POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. — In just the few short weeks that the volleyball season has been underway, Southern Nazarene has come fairly close to being undefeated.
If not for two heart pounding matches with College of the Ozarks (Mo.), SNU might be staring at a 6-0 record. The Crimson Storm though know that 4-2 is closer to 6-0 than most would believe. SNU opened the C of O Mazzio’s Tournament Friday afternoon with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-19) win over Central Methodist (Mo.) before falling to Ozarks, 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-16, 27-25), for the second time in as many weeks.
In the opener, the Crimson Storm eased through Central Methodist in a straight set win.
Morgan Loewen hit .400 (14-4-25) against the Eagles and also served four aces.
Taryn Steele ripped eight kills with just two errors, hitting .273 and also added 12 digs.
Ellen Martin added six kills and three aces while
KateLyn Biddy posted nine digs.
In the nightcap, it was a chance for SNU to redeem its only loss of the season to the Bobcats. The second meeting nearly mirrored the first with the same final score and another close contest. Instead of winning the first set, like SNU did back in the Oklahoma City Classic, the Crimson Storm dropped the first set, but rallied back to tie it at 1-1. Ozarks pulled away in the third set and just like the first meeting, a set went past the 25-point mark. This time it was the final set as SNU made the Bobcats work for the win.
Steele led the way with 17 kills and 17 digs. Loewen notched eight kills while Martin had six.
KateLyn Biddy also posted 20 digs.
The Crimson Storm close out the C of O Mazzio’s Tournament by playing Harris-Stowe (Mo.) and Williams Woods (Mo.) tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
