Storm Fall at Tulsa in Exhibition Game

Southern Nazarene drops exhibition game at Tulsa

Box Score TULSA, Okla. — Southern Nazarene opened up the 2016-17 basketball season with a 89-50 exhibition loss at Tulsa Thursday night.

The Crimson Storm fell behind early, as Tulsa shot 47.8 percent from the field in the first quarter. Tulsa jumped out to a 28-18 lead. SNU shot 25 percent from the field, making five of the 20 shots they took. Callee Mason went 2-5 from the field for five points to lead the Storm in the opening quarter.

The SNU defense came alive in the second period, as it held Tulsa to 36.8 percent shooting. Unfortunately, the Crimson Storm could not take advantage of the cold streak. SNU shot 5.6 percent for the second quarter and 15.8 percent for the first half, en route to a 45-27 deficit at the half. Mason led the Crimson Storm at half with five points, and chipping in four rebounds.

Southern Nazarene's offense continued to struggle in the third quarter as they were held to 2-of-13 shooting for 15.4 percent. SNU held Tulsa to 10-of-27 shooting for 37 percent. TU was led by Liesl Sproerl who was 5-12 from the field for 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Abby Boyd led the Storm as she scored eight points, six of those points coming from the free-throw line. 

Through the first three quarters of the game SNU struggled to keep control of the ball as they had 15 turnovers, which led to 16 TU points. The Storm also had trouble keeping the Golden Hurricane out of the paint as TU outscored the Storm 38-8 in the paint in the first three periods. 

Tulsa finished the game shooting 41.1 percent from the field, while the Storm were held to 18.6 percent. SNU allowed 48 points in the paint, 18 points off of turnovers and 21 second chance points, which all added up to a 89-50 loss for the Crimson Storm. 

Boyd and Madeline Schroepfer were the only SNU players to score in double digits as they both finished with 10 points. Boyd also added two assists and four rebounds. Rachel Doerneman added six points and five rebounds and Danielle Gaddis chipped in four points and seven rebounds.
