Henderson State Fends off the Storm Despite Late Push

Southern Nazarene falls in season opener to Henderson State, 57-21

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene showed fight in the second half, but an early deficit was too much to overcome as the Crimson Storm fell 57-21 to Henderson State in the season opener Thursday night at SNU Football Stadium.

The Crimson Storm (0-1, 0-1 GAC) found themselves in an early hole after Henderson State (1-0, 1-0 GAC) struck twice in the first quarter. Austin Ledbetter connected with Jesse McElroy IV for an 18-yard score on the Reddies' opening drive, and Myron Thrash Jr. added a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 after one quarter. A 48-yard field goal from Ryan McDonnell extended the lead to 17-0 at halftime.

Henderson State came out firing to start the third quarter, with Ledbetter hitting Jerrale Powers for a 25-yard touchdown just six seconds into the half and then finding Taylin Paskel for a 42-yard score minutes later to push the lead to 30-0.

SNU answered with its best stretch of the night. Maddox Olatunde capped a 4-play, 75-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, with Kyler Clapper adding the extra point to make it 30-7. After Henderson State responded with a 4-yard run from Chris Gannaway, Tanner Dawes broke loose for a 20-yard touchdown run to trim the deficit to 36-14 late in the third.

The Reddies pulled away again behind two touchdown runs from Trent Haygood and a 15-yard scoring pass from Jordan Walker to Emmanuel Yancy to build a 57-14 lead.

Olatunde closed the night for the Storm with his second touchdown, punching it in at the 0:53 mark to cap a 12-play, 75-yard drive to make the final 57-21.

Olatunde led the Storm offense with two rushing touchdowns, while Jaxon Worley paced the receiving corps with 84 yards and Dawes added 22 yards and a score on the ground.
