Crimson Storm Come Up Short in Magnolia

Southern Nazarene unable to hang on as the Muleriders snag the 27-21 victory

MAGNOLIA, Ark. - Southern Nazarene put together its best offensive night of the young season, but Southern Arkansas used two late third-quarter scores to hold off the Crimson Storm 27-21 Saturday night in Magnolia.

The Crimson Storm (0-2, 0-2 GAC) dropped to 0-2 on the road despite rushing for 272 yards, falling to the Muleriders (1-1, 1-1 GAC) on the road.

Southern Arkansas struck first. Tyler Maull capped a 10-play, 52-yard drive with a 45-yard field goal at the 8:39 mark of the first quarter to make it 3-0.

SNU answered early in the second quarter. Kaden Manuel finished an 11-play, 73-yard march with a 1-yard touchdown run, with Kyler Clapper adding the extra point to give the Storm a 7-3 lead with 11:02 left in the half. 

The lead changed twice before halftime. Drew Davis answered for SAU with a 1-yard run at 8:06 to make it 10-7, but Maddox Olatunde broke loose for a 17-yard touchdown run with 3:56 to go in the second, capping an 8-play, 76-yard drive to put SNU back in front 14-10. Maull added a 20-yard field goal as time expired in the half to cut it to 14-13.

The Muleriders took control in the third. Katrevion Thomas scored on an 18-yard run with 1:11 left in the quarter to cap a 12-play, 84-yard drive, and 38 seconds later Arkez Gomez broke a 34-yard touchdown run on a one-play drive to push the lead to 27-14.

SNU made a late push. Jaxon Worley capped a 13-play, 80-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run with 1:43 left, with Kyler Clapper's kick making it 27-21. The Storm couldn't get the ball back as SAU ran out the clock.

Olatunde led the Storm ground game with 92 yards and a touchdown, while Worley added 45 yards and the late score. Karomo Collins also chipped in 54 yards.
