Crimson Storm Unable to Overcome Late Tiger Push

The back and forth battle goes in favor of East Central 35-24 in Bethany

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene traded punches with undefeated East Central, but the Tigers used a late fourth-quarter touchdown to pull away for a 35-24 win Saturday at SNU Football Stadium.

The Crimson Storm (0-3, 0-3 GAC) came up short despite rushing for 301 yards and averaging 7.8 yards per play, falling to the Tigers (3-0, 3-0 GAC).

SNU struck first. Jaxon Worley capped a 6-play, 87-yard drive with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Cotton Tanner at the 4:06 mark of the first quarter, with Kyler Clapper adding the extra point to make it 7-0.

East Central answered just before halftime. Austin Bowen finished a 14-play, 82-yard march with a 5-yard touchdown run with 44 seconds left in the second quarter, with Gabriel Ogura's kick tying it at 7-7.

The teams traded scores in the third quarter. Sergio Kennedy put ECU in front with a 3-yard run with 10:50 on the clock to make it 14-7, but Karomo Collins answered 19 seconds later with a 79-yard touchdown run to tie it at 14-14.

Kennedy broke the tie again with a 12-yard run at 4:33 in the third quarter to cap a 6-play, 37-yard drive, making it 21-14. Maddox Olatunde then answered for SNU with a 6-yard run, finishing a 5-play, 76-yard drive to tie it at 21-21.

The Tigers took control in the fourth quarter. Bowen scored on a 7-yard run with 14:55 left to play to cap a 5-play, 72-yard drive to make it 28-21. SNU answered once again, this time with a 21-yard field goal from Clapper with 7:17 left to cut it to 28-24.

East Central closed it out late as Kennedy scored his third touchdown of the day on an 8-yard run with 1:32 left on the game clock, to make it 35-24.

Collins led the Storm run game with 101 yards and a touchdown on just four carries, while Worley added 92 yards passing and a touchdown. Tanner chipped in 43 receiving yards and a score and Olatunde added a 6-yard touchdown run.

The Crimson Storm will travel to Durnat to take on Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday, September 26 at 2:00 pm.
