Southern Nazarene Cruises to a Perfect Start to the Season

Crimson Storm Volleyball is off to their best start in the DII era after a 4-0 weekend at the Drury Invitational.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Southern Nazarene volleyball kept its perfect start intact, powering past Newman and Minot State on Saturday to close out the Drury Invitational, improving to 4-0, the program's best start in the Division II era.

Game 1

The Crimson Storm (4-0) took control early and bounced back late to beat the Jets (0-3) 25-16, 25-18, 19-25, 25-18.

SNU set the tone in the opening two sets. The Storm hit .368 in set one with 18 kills and followed with a .433 clip in set two on 15 kills and just two errors. Southern Nazarene out-hit Newman .292 to .191 for the match and held a 58-41 advantage in kills.

Newman made a push in the third, posting 13 kills to take the set 25-19, but SNU answered in the fourth. The Crimson Storm closed with 15 kills on a .256 hitting percentage to secure the match.

Kate Wright led all attackers with a match-high 20 kills and added 12 digs for a double-double. Maecie Hawthorne chipped in 11 kills and two blocks, while Rayanna Mauldin added 10 kills.

Emma Grace Moddelmog directed the offense with 48 assists and 16 digs. Sydney Marquez led the back row with 22 digs and four assists, while Ava Permenter and Moddelmog each had three aces. 

Game 2

The Crimson Storm capped a 4-0 weekend with a 25-21, 25-16, 25-16 win over the Beavers (1-3), improving to 4-0 to start the year.

SNU came out efficient in the opener, posting 16 kills on .344 hitting to take the first set 25-21. 

The Storm pulled away in the second set. Southern Nazarene hit .220 with 11 kills and served up the pressure at the line, holding Minot State to just .049 hitting in the set on 11 kills and nine errors to go up 2-0.

SNU closed it out in the third with its best offensive push late. The Crimson Storm tallied 15 kills on a .267 clip to win 25-16 and complete the sweep.

Mauldin led SNU with 12 kills and added two aces and two blocks. Wright finished with 11 kills and a match-high 17 digs for a double-double, while Maecie Hawthorne chipped in seven kills.

Moddelmog finished the day with 32 assists and added two aces and a block. Reagan Glenn led from the service line with three aces and added eight digs, while Riley Richardson anchored the net with four blocks.

Next Up

The Crimson Storm are set to travel to Cameron on Tuesday, September 1. The two squads are set to play at 6:00 pm in Lawton, Oklahoma.
