Storm Fall in Doubleheader to Arkansas-Monticello

SNU Opens GAC Play with Two Losses, Looks to Bounce Back Monday in Series Finale

BETHANY, Okla. - Southern Nazarene opened GAC conference play Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader against Arkansas-Monticello at Feland Field. The Crimson Storm battled in both contests but came up short, falling 6-3 in game one and 8-0 in game two.

Game 1
Arkansas-Monticello (3-4, 2-0 GAC) wasted no time getting on the board, using three hits in the first inning to grab a quick 1-0 lead. Southern Nazarene (4-6, 0-2 GAC) answered in the bottom of the third when Dominic Garcia reached on an error and later came around to score on a double down the left field line from Blake Brinkmeyer to tie the game at 1-1.

The score stayed locked until the sixth inning when the Weevils broke things open. UAM strung together four hits and drew a walk to plate four runs in the frame, taking control with a 5-1 advantage. They added another run in the seventh to stretch the lead to 6-1.

SNU made a late push in the bottom of the ninth. Braden Pingel singled and stole second before Cade Ross ripped a double down the right field line to bring him home. A sacrifice fly from Maikah Gonzalez added another run, but the Storm couldn't complete the comeback as Arkansas-Monticello secured the 6-3 win.

Ross and Garcia each recorded two hits to lead the Storm, while Brinkmeyer added an RBI double.

Game 2
The Weevils carried momentum into the second game, striking for three runs in the second inning capitalizing on a hit batter and an SNU error to take an early lead.

Arkansas-Monticello added a solo home run in the fourth to make it 4-0 before breaking it open in the fifth. A three-run homerun to right center extended the advantage to 7-0 and put the Crimson Storm in a tough spot.

Southern Nazarene had a few early opportunities, including a leadoff double from Brinkmeyer in the first and a double from Pingel in the fourth, but couldn't find the timely hit to break through.

UAM tacked on one more run in the seventh, and the Storm were held to three hits in the 8-0 loss.

Next Up
The Crimson Storm will finish their series with the Weevils on Monday, February 16 at 12:00 pm for a single game in Bethany.
