Storm Splits Opening Doubleheader at New Mexico Highlands

SNU takes game one 10-7 before falling 11-10 in a back-and-forth second game

LAS VEGAS, NM.- Southern Nazarene opened their 2026 season Friday at New Mexico Highlands, battling through a full day of baseball with a split in a doubleheader on day one of the opening series.

Game 1
Southern Nazarene (1-1) jumped into action early but saw New Mexico Highlands (1-1) strike first in front of their home crowd. The Cowboys grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI double and timely hits that set the tone. SNU responded in the second inning, getting on the board when Jaxon Gless reached on an error and brought in Blake Brinkmeyer, and Cade Ross followed with a two run homerun to even the score at 3-3. NMHU answered back, plating runs in the second and third to lead 7-3 heading into the fourth.

The Storm offense came alive in the fourth inning. Gless delivered a go ahead two run homerun and Aiden McCullough added an RBI single before ultimately stealing home to even things at 7-7. Josh Bay's clutch double drove in Braden Pingel and gave SNU their first lead of the game at 8-7. Southern Nazarene kept pressure on, and pushed the advantage to 9-7 after the sixth. A late RBI knock then extended the margin to 10-7.

The Cowboys finished the game with 12 hits but made two costly errors, which SNU took advantage of. The Storm collected 11 hits and timely offense across the lineup, allowing them to hold the lead and secure a 10-7 victory to open the 2026 season.

Game 2
Southern Nazarene and New Mexico Highlands battled back and forth in a high scoring affair. NMHU again struck early, with a first inning solo homerun to take the lead. The Cowboys extended that advantage with three runs in the second, highlighted by an RBI single and two more RBI knocks, building a 4-0 lead. SNU finally got on the board in the fourth when Bay put one over the fence making it 4-1.

NMHU responded with a three run fourth to stretch the margin to 7-1, then added to it in the fifth inning. Southern Nazarene began chipping away when McCullough belted a two run homerun in the fifth to make it 7-3, but New Mexico Highlands continued to add insurance runs and led 10-3 after five.

SNU exploded for three runs in the sixth thanks to Kane Springer's three‑run blast that scored both Brinkmeyer and Pingel and brought Southern Nazarene right back into it at 10-6. The rally continued in the seventh when Pingel's sac fly and Springer's RBI hit by pitch, along with two more runs thanks to an error, tied the game at 10-10. But with one out and runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, NMHU answered with a clutch RBI single to secure the 11-10 victory in game two.
