Storm Wrap Up Four Game Series at New Mexico Highlands

Southern Nazarene earns doubleheader split to close weekend in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, NM. - Southern Nazarene wrapped up their trip to New Mexico Highlands on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader with the Cowboys. The Storm rolled to a big win in game one before coming up just short in a late-inning battle in game two. After the two days in Las Vegas, SNU sits at 2-2 on the season.

Game 1
Southern Nazarene exploded offensively in the first game of the day, topping New Mexico Highlands 22-11 in a high scoring affair. The Storm jumped on top early as they took advantage of timely hitting and capitalized on NMHU errors to seize control.

The scoring got started in the first inning when Jaxon Gless crushed a two run homerun out of the park, giving the Crimson Storm an early lead before New Mexico Highlands answered back with two quick runs of their own. But the Storm offense didn't let up, as Gless returned to the plate in the third with a three run shot that pushed SNU in front 5-2.

The Crimson Storm's big fourth inning saw them tack on multiple hits, including an RBI single from Gless and a two run single from Kane Springer as the Storm stretched their advantage to 9-2. The offense continued to pour it on in the fifth, highlighted by Josh Bay's grand slam and multiple RBI knocks that put the game well out of reach.

Every starter contributed to the 22 run attack, with Gless finishing with 4 runs scored and 6 RBI, Bay tallied 5 RBI, and Cade Ross crossed the plate five times. Ross also had four stolen bases to break the single game stolen bases program record. Southern Nazarene took advantage of five NMHU lifting them to a big 22-11 win.

Game 2
The second game of the day turned into a back and forth battle, but New Mexico Highlands edged Southern Nazarene 8–7. The Cowboys jumped out in front early, scoring three runs in the second inning and adding three more in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead.

SNU didn't go away quietly. Jaxon Gless drove in a run with an RBI double, and Cade Ross added an RBI to keep the Storm within striking distance. The Storm kept chipping away in the fifth when Aiden McCullough ripped a two run double, cutting the deficit to 6-4.

New Mexico Highlands answered with two more runs to extend the lead to 8-4, but Southern Nazarene made things interesting late. In the seventh, the Storm put together a rally with key hits from Maikah Gonzalez and Ross, pulling within one at 8-7. SNU had the tying run on, but the Cowboys were able to shut the door and hang on for the 8-7 win.

Next Up
The Crimson Storm will return to Feland Field as they host Southwest Baptist on February 6-7.
