Crimson Storm Fall in Season Opener to Henderson State

A fourth quarter surge helps the Reddies knock off Southern Nazarene

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Southern Nazarene opened their 2025 football season on the road Saturday afternoon against Henderson State. The Crimson Storm battled through the first three quarters, but a dominant final period from the Reddies handed SNU a 48-13 loss to begin the year.

Henderson State (1-0, 1-0 GAC) opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 51-yard field goal from Ryan McDonnell. McDonnell later added a 44-yarder in the second quarter to make it 6-0 before SNU (0-1, 0-1 GAC) answered. The Storm pieced together a 12-play, 48-yard drive capped off by a 33-yard field goal from Kameron Van Prooyen, cutting the deficit in half at 6-3. Just before halftime, the Reddies extended their lead as Andrew Edwards connected with Micah Greene for an 18-yard touchdown, sending SNU into the break trailing 13-3.

The Storm came out strong in the second half of their season debut. Quarterback Bryson Evans marched SNU 75 yards down the field on their opening possession and capped it off with a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 13-10. Henderson answered with another Edwards touchdown strike, a 24-yard pass to Aundreus Griffin, but Van Prooyen's school record breaking 51-yard field goal late in the third quarter kept SNU within striking distance at 20-13.

The fourth quarter proved decisive as Henderson seized full control. The Reddies broke the game open with an 80-yard punt return touchdown by Taylin Paskel, followed by a defensive score when Leo Morris scooped up a fumble and returned it 26 yards to the end zone. Henderson then tacked on two more touchdowns, including a 7-yard pass from Edwards to Jacaylon Zachery, to finish off the 48-13 victory.

Evans' rushing score and Van Prooyen's two field goals highlighted the day for SNU, but costly turnovers and explosive plays in the final quarter made the difference in the season opener.
