BETHANY, Okla. - For junior Colter Bufford from Edmond, Oklahoma, choosing a college wasn't just about academics—it was about finding a place that aligned with his faith, values, and goals as a student-athlete.
Colter was drawn to Southern Nazarene University because of its strong sense of community, faith-centered values, and commitment to academic excellence. "The professors here were very personal and committed to their students, which gave me confidence in this decision," he shares. "My coaches believe in me, and that belief has always been evident in the way they treat me. That's a big reason I came and continue to excel at this institution."
Representing SNU both in athletics and in the classroom means striving for excellence in every part of life. "Whether I'm competing in athletics or working hard in the classroom, I see it as an opportunity to honor my team, my coaches, my university, and my faith," Colter explains.
A defining moment for Colter came through attending chapel and experiencing God in a communal way. "Worshiping alongside my peers, hearing powerful messages, and being part of an environment where faith is shared and lived out has deepened my understanding of what it means to walk with Christ," he says. "It's reminded me that faith isn't just personal—it's something we grow in together."
Balancing academics, athletics, and life has strengthened Colter's faith and trust in God. "There are times when I feel like I'm not good at academics or athletics, but knowing my true identity is in God gives me confidence that He has a plan for me, no matter how I'm feeling in that moment," he reflects.
Colter credits his coaches, teammates, and athletic staff for helping him grow as a person, not just as a player. "They've been role models, encouragers, and accountability partners. They go out of their way to support us, even when it's not a good time for them. I greatly appreciate the care they put into us athletes—it shows what it means to have a servant-hearted nature."
For Giving Day supporters, Colter emphasizes the difference your generosity makes. "Your support impacts every part of our experience—from the equipment we use to the opportunities we have to compete and grow. Beyond that, it creates a space where young athletes like me can thrive academically, athletically, and spiritually. It's truly an investment in our future."
Looking ahead, Colter believes his experience at SNU has prepared him to live out the lessons he's learned. "It's taught me to lead with integrity, work hard under pressure, and approach life with a servant's heart. The lessons about discipline, faith, perseverance, and community will guide me in whatever I do next."
