Crimson Storm Stumble at Pitt State Classic

Southern Nazarene drops matches to Pittsburg State and Maryville in final day of Pitt State Classic

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Southern Nazarene wrapped up action at the Pitt State Classic falling short to host Pittsburg State and Maryville on Friday afternoon.

Game 1

The Crimson Storm (2-5, 0-0 GAC) met host Pittsburg State in their second contest of the Pitt State Classic. SNU was challenged early as the Gorillas (5-1, 1-0 MIAA) came out firing in the opening set. The Storm held close through the first few points, with Rayanna Mauldin and Isabella Labrada finding early kills to keep it even at 5-5. However, a 9-2 Pittsburg State run swung the momentum, and despite six team kills, SNU couldn't recover in a 25-14 set one loss.

Set two saw the Storm continue to battle but struggle to find consistency. Georgia Byers and Labrada added kills to cut the deficit to 9-7 early, but a series of attacking errors fueled a 10-2 Gorilla stretch that opened up the frame. Brelee Mauldin dropped in back-to-back service aces late, but Pitt State closed the set out  25-13 to take a 2-0 lead.

The third set showcased Southern Nazarene's resilience. Behind steady serving from Jasmine Liongco and tough swings from Mauldin, the Storm forced multiple ties in a back-and-forth frame. SNU trailed 22-18 before rallying with a 5-1 run capped by a Byers kill to even the score at 23-23. The Gorillas, though, managed the final two points to edge out the set, 25-23, and secure the sweep.

Game 2

Southern Nazarene closed out Friday at the Pitt State Classic with a three-set setback against Maryville inside John Lance Arena.

The Crimson Storm showed stretches of strong play but couldn't overcome Maryville's efficient attack, as the Saints (2-5, 0-0 GLVC) hit .302 on the match.

In the opening set, SNU hung close early behind kills from Hannah Morgan and Isabella Labrada, pulling within 12-11 midway through the frame. Maryville answered with a 7-2 run to gain momentum and held on for the 25-18 win.

Set two followed a similar pattern, as Georgia Byers sparked the Storm offense with a pair of kills to keep things tight at 10-9. However, the Saints again used a mid-set push, stretching their lead behind Emma Hoing and Ellie Witthaus en route to a 25-17 result.

Southern Nazarene saved its best for the third, trading points deep into the set. Morgan and Labrada combined for timely swings, and Sydney Marquez fueled the back row defense with 12 digs. SNU rallied late to cut a 23-18 deficit down to 23-21, but Maryville finished off the frame with the final two points to close the sweep.
