Storm Fall to No. 9 Southwest Minnesota State

Crimson Storm fall short on day one of the Pitt State Challenge

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Southern Nazarene faced off Thursday evening in a matchup against No. 9 Southwest Minnesota State, falling in straight sets at the Pitt State Challenge.

The Crimson Storm (2-3, 0-0 GAC) faced one of the nation's top offenses in the Mustangs (5-0, 0-0 NSIC), who entered unbeaten and continued their early-season run with a balanced attack. SNU opened the first set trading points early, but SMSU's efficiency at the net proved decisive, hitting .552 with 18 kills to secure a 25-12 decision.

Set two saw Southern Nazarene battle back behind strong swings from Kate Wright and Isabella Labrada. Wright's kills helped SNU keep pace, pulling within 16-14 midway through the frame. However, the Mustangs strung together a late 6-2 push to widen the gap and close it out, 25-19.

In the third, the Crimson Storm worked to extend the match, with Rayanna Mauldin sparking momentum from the service line and Riley Richardson adding key blocks at the net. SNU closed within 19-15, but SMSU answered with a decisive run to cap the sweep, 25-17.

Wright led the Storm with 11 kills and six digs, while Labrada added five kills and two blocks. Setter duo Emma Grace Moddelmog and Brelee Mauldin paced the offense with nine assists a piece, and Avery Ramos chipped in six digs on the back row.
