Crimson Storm Split Doubleheader with East Central

Southern Nazarene avoids series sweep with walkoff win against the Tigers

BETHANY, Okla. - The Crimson Storm returned to Tere Webber Field to conclude their three-game series with East Central. The Tigers were able to take the series after an offense burst in game one, but the Storm avoided the sweep with a walkoff in game two.

Game 1

The Crimson Storm (23-15, 14-9 GAC)  looked to even the series, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a two-run shot from McKayla Franks. Olivia Hernandez kept the ECU (15-19, 8-15 GAC) offense quiet, handing them a few scoreless frames.

The Tigers finally struck in the fifth inning after an RBI single cut the deficit to one. East Central then exploded for a nine-run sixth inning taking advantage of four SNU errors.

SNU needed a response to avoid a run-rule but the Crimson Storm stranded two base runners falling in game one of the doubleheader, 10-2.

Game 2

Southern Nazarene looked to bounce back, but the Tigers were not making anything easy. East Central got on the board first in the top of the third after a sacrifice fly plated one run.

It was not long before SNU responded after Maddie Southerland and Emma Swearingen teamed up to drive in three runs to give the Storm a 3-1 lead.

The Tigers chipped away at the Storm lead before taking it over after an RBI single in the top of the fourth. East Central continued their tear at the plate tacking on two more runs to lead 6-3 in the sixth.

The Crimson Storm needed a rally and got just that after Liana Heshiki doubled in a run to put SNU within two. Kristen Mullendore followed with a double of her own to plate Heshiki and cut the ECU lead to 6-5 heading to the seventh inning.

Maddie Southerland took over in the circle shutting down the Tiger offense and giving the Crimson Storm a shot at a walkoff win. Franks kicked off the final push with a single up the middle before she scored the tying run after a double from Eden Anderson. With just one out left to play, Kenedi Morelock singled up the middle to score the game winning run and secure the 7-6 Crimson Storm victory.

The game three victory marked Head Coach Brian Madden's 150th career win, all of which have taken place with the Crimson Storm.
