Crimson Storm Pick Up Opening Win Over Arkansas Tech

Southern Nazarene takes game one of a crucial series in Russellville

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - The Crimson Storm hit the road to take on the Golden Suns for a weekend conference series. The Storm held on late to secure the game-one victory over Arkansas Tech, 9-6.

Both offenses were quiet to begin the contest, but Southern Nazarene (26-15, 15-9 GAC) struck first in the top of the third after a wild pitch plated one run. Kelsi Hilton followed with a three-run bomb to extend the Crimson Storm lead to 4-0.

The Golden Suns (23-21, 13-13 GAC) found their response in the bottom half of the inning after a two-run home run put ATU within two. Hilton then took over in the circle for starting pitcher Olvia Hernandez, shutting down any Golden Suns' momentum.

SNU went to work in the fourth plating five runs to extend their lead once more. Liana Heshiki kicked off the scoring with an RBI single before Kristen Mullendore drew a bases-loaded walk to plate one more. Maddie Southerland was able to keep the scoring going, driving in a run before Hilton drove in one more on a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 9-2.

Hilton kept the ATU hitters off balance until they struck again in the sixth threatening the SNU lead. The Golden Suns were able to string together three hits and take advantage of two SNU errors to trail 9-5.

Janie Worthington checked in to finish things off in the circle for the Crimson Storm, but Arkansas Tech tacked on one final run. Worthington was able to finish things off helping SNU collect the 9-6 victory in game one.
