WICHITA, Kan. - The Crimson Storm met the Newman Jets for a midweek road contest in Wichita. Southern Nazarene collected two gutsy wins over Newman for the doubleheader sweep.
Game 1
The Jets (4-22, 0-4 MIAA)Â got on the board first after an RBI single in the first gave them an early 1-0 lead. The Crimson Storm (16-13, 7-7 GAC)Â tied things up in the top of the second after
Hailey Evans drove in
Emma Green.
Katelyn Woodard settled in dominating from the circle handing the Jets a scoreless frame. SNU snagged the lead in the top of the fourth after another RBI single from Evans plated
Kelsi Hilton.
The Storm tacked on a few insurance runs in the sixth inning after an RBI double from
McKayla Franks and
Marlee Warden to push the SNU lead to 5-1.
Woodard finished off the Jets holding them to just one run and three hits to help lead the Crimson Storm to a 5-1 victory.
Game 2
The Storm looked to continue their momentum from game one as they struck first after a sacrifice fly from
Liana Heshiki plated one run. The Jets evened the score quickly after an RBI single tied the score at 1-1.
Southern Nazarene took over posting a four-run second inning thanks to an RBI single from
Maddie Southerland and RBI doubles from both Evans and
Kenedi Morelock. Newman was not backing down as they tacked on three runs to trail SNU 5-4 after just two innings.
The Jets tied the score once again in the bottom of the sixth after an SNU error plated one run. Neither team could snap the tie in the seventh sending the contest to extra innings.
The Crimson Storm was ready to call game putting up four runs in the top of the eighth. Heshiki got things started with another sacrifice fly, scoring one run before
Kristen Mullendore belted a double to plate two more. Warden added another run to the board scoring Mullendore on a single to center to give SNU a 9-5 lead.
Southern Nazarene collected the final three outs they needed to secure the game two victory and the doubleheader sweep over Newman on the road.
Next Up
The Crimson Storm will return home to host the Henderson State Reddies for a conference series. The two squads will play a single game on Friday, March 21 at 3:00 pm and a doubleheader on Saturday, March 22 at noon.
