Storm Falls in Extras to Newman 15-14

SNU rallies from a late deficit, but Newman’s 10th-inning push hands them the win

WICHITA, Kan. - Southern Nazarene hit the road for a midweek showdown against Newman University. The Crimson Storm came up just short, falling to the Jets in extra innings, 15-14.

The Storm (6-16, 2-10 GAC) came out swinging in the first inning. Antonio Sabala drew a walk and Brady Benedict singled to left as SNU quickly loaded the bases. Ryan Talley stepped up and delivered a clutch two run single to give the Storm an early 2-0 lead. Newman (6-13, 2-8 MIAA) wasted no time responding as they plated five runs on five hits in the bottom half of the inning to jump ahead 5-2.

SNU answered back in the second inning with nine runs. After a walk, hit by pitch, and another walk loaded the bases. Benedict was then hit by a pitch to bring in a run. Another run scored another before Weston Hicks cleared the bases with a double to left, putting SNU ahead 8-5. Talley followed with an RBI double and a groundout from Cade Ross brought in another run, extending the Storm's lead to 11-5.

The Jets put up two runs in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 11-7. In the fourth, NU added four more runs on three hits to even the score at 11-11. Newman kept things rolling in the fifth, scoring one run to take a 12-11 lead.

SNU continued to fight in the seventh inning as Sabala came up clutch with a solo blast to right field to tie things up again at 12-12. The Jets quickly responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, once again regaining a 14-12 advantage.

In the eighth inning of the game, Ross drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He then moved to third on another wild pitch. A fielder's choice kept him there, but a groundout from Sabala brought him in to cut the deficit to one. Benedict followed with a double, tying the game at 14-14 heading into the ninth inning of the game.

Both teams fought through extra innings, but Newman came through in the bottom of the tenth inning. After two hits the Jets brought in the winning run to hand SNU a tough 15-14 loss.
