Crimson Storm Come Up Short Against Missouri Southern

SNU led early and made a late run, but the Lions’ second-half surge sealed an 85-75 win

BETHANY, Okla. - Southern Nazarene played their first home game of the 2025-26 season in the Sawyer Center, taking on Missouri Southern in a fast paced matchup. The Crimson Storm started strong and held a few leads throughout the game, but a big second half run by the Lions made the difference as SNU fell 85-75.

Missouri Southern (5-3, 0-0 MIAA) struck first with a layup in the paint, but Southern Nazarene (0-4, 0-0 GAC) answered right away. Halyn Browning knocked down a smooth jumper, and Jillian Crawford followed it up with a deep three off a clean pass from Hannah Duncan. Moments later, Jordan Hoffman buried another three off another Duncan assist, giving the Crimson Storm a spark.

The Lions responded with a run of their own, hitting a three and a layup, but the Storm punched right back. Braci Nyberg knocked down a pair of free throws, Carley Gasaway drilled a three, and Boston Berry added a strong jumper in the paint. Southern Nazarene closed out the quarter on top, leading 21-14 after a strong defensive stretch.

In the second quarter, Shannon Burton got things rolling with back to back free throws on a fastbreak. Nessa Begay then added two more at the line, keeping the Crimson Storm in control. Missouri Southern tried to chip away with a tip in and a layup, but the Storm stayed steady. Burton buried a three pointer, and Crawford followed with one of her own, pushing the lead heading into halftime. Southern Nazarene went to the locker room up 38-37.

Coming out of halftime, the MSSU caught fire and flipped the game with a nine point run, jumping ahead 49-40. Nyberg stopped the run with a free throw, and Crawford answered with a fastbreak three. Nyberg added another triple, and Gasaway hit a jumper to keep Southern Nazarene within reach. But Missouri Southern kept knocking down tough shots and closed the third quarter with a 66-52 advantage over the Crimson Storm.

In the fourth, Nyberg opened with a free throw before MSSU scored inside. Begay responded with a strong layup in the paint. Jena Bay brought the crowd to life with a fastbreak three off a feed from Crawford, then added another layup off a pass from Burton. Nyberg buried another fastbreak three, Hoffman on the assist, and Crawford added a layup plus two free throws to keep the Crimson Storm fighting late.

SNU made a strong push late, but it wasn't enough. Missouri Southern closed it out and the Crimson Storm fell 85-75 in their home opener. Jillian Crawford led the way with 15 points while Carley Gasaway added 13 for the Crimson Storm in their first outing of the season inside the Sawyer Center.
