Crimson Storm Take Down the Jets

Southern Nazarene takes the match over Newman in five sets

BETHANY, Okla. - The Crimson Storm met the Newman Jets in an afternoon matchup inside the Sawyer Center. The Storm had to battle back as they took down Newman in reverse sweep fashion, 3-2.

The two squads battled from the first serve. The Jets (1-9, 0-0 MIAA) got on the board first, but the Storm (3-7, 0-0 GAC) followed with a kill from Kate Wright. A run from Newman put them in front, but SNU responded with a run of their own to tie the score.

A handful of kills from the Jets put them back in control. Newman kept the pressure on to lead 19-11. They took over from their securing the set one victory, 25-17.

The Storm took an early lead in the second set after a few errors from NU and a Kaylie Marshall kill. Newman responded quickly with a 6-1 run to take the lead.

Riley Richardson and Marshall teamed up for a pair of kills and a Tatum Smith service ace put the Storm within two. The Jets ran with their lead from there as they snagged set two 25-20.

Southern Nazarene looked to avoid the sweep as they jumped out to an early 7-3 lead after a few Newman errors. The Storm continued their momentum with a 6-0 run to push their lead to 9.

The Jets get a few points, but a kill from Whitney Bowie gets SNU back on track. The Storm ran with it from there going on a 6-0 run to win the set, 25-12.

The Crimson Storm looked to even the score in set four. Tessa Henry and Richardson teamed up for a big block to get SNU started. A few kills from Wright and Bowie pushed the Storm ahead even more.

The kills kept coming for SNU as they led 16-12. The Jets looked for a comeback and did just that tying the score up. Another kill from Bowie and an ace from Wright pushed the Crimson Storm ahead once more. 

A serving run from Emma Grace Moddelmog finished the set for Southern Nazarene as they took the fourth set, 25-20.

Wright and Bowie continued to dominate putting the Storm ahead early in the fifth set. A service error and another kill from Wright pushed SNU to 6-1. SNU kept the momentum on their side of the net as Richardson and Henry added on some kills of their own. A Newman error would be all it took for the Storm to claim the set, 15-7, and the reverse sweep, 3-2.

Bowie led the SNU offense as she posted a career high 18 kills on the day. Moddelmog also led the offense with 45 assists and collected 3 service aces.

The Storm will meet Missouri Western State on Saturday, September 21 at 10:00 AM inside the Sawyer Center for their final match of the SNU/UCO Tournament.
