Storm Sneak By Arkansas-Fort Smith

Southern Nazarene is able to hold on snagging a 68-66 road win at UAFS

FORT SMITH, Ark. - The Crimson Storm hit the road for the first time this season to take on the Lions of Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Lions tested the SNU lead late, but the Storm was able to hang on to secure a 68-66 victory in Fort Smith.

The SNU (2-0, 0-0 GAC) offense was unstoppable from the start, but a late comeback from Arkansas-Fort Smith (2-3, 0-0 MIAA) put a Crimson Storm win in jeopardy. SNU hung on as four Storm members posted double-digit scoring nights lifting them to a victory.

Southern Nazarene set the tone from the tip off as Baron Bracey hit a three to get the Storm on the board first. The Lions followed shortly with a pair of free throws to trail by one.

The SNU offense continued to dominate as James Burries notched a three. The Storm continued to tack on the points, but the Lions stayed close behind. Stevie Strong got in on the scoring frenzy with a long ball to give SNU a hefty 23-12 lead. The shots kept falling as Bam Johnson notched a three of his own to push the Crimson Storm lead to 17.

The Storm continued to win the battle in the paint and beyond the arc. A few free throws from Tracy Godfrey Jr. and Bracey extended the Storm lead to 42-27. Johnson tacked on another three while Strong got in one final layup before the halftime break giving SNU a 47-31 lead.

SNU picked up right where they left off as they continued to pour in the points to begin the second half. A pair of free throws from Bracey and a three from Jeremy Golson allowed the Storm to maintain a 20-point lead. UAFS responded with a 9-0 lead to cut the deficit to eight. Godfrey Jr. notched a layup and drew a foul sending him to the charity stripe. He knocked down his one free throw putting the Storm back in front by 11.

The Crimson Storm continued to maintain the lead, but the Lions began to slowly chip away. A UAFS three-pointer cut the SNU lead to 65-59. A few trips to the free throw line for the Lions proved costly for the Storm as UAFS continued to chip away trailing just 67-64.

An SNU turnover and a Lion's bucket cut the Storm lead to just one with 17 seconds left on the clock. UAFS was forced to foul as Golson made his way to the line. He missed his shot but got his own rebound helping knock some time off the clock before he was fouled again. He then knocked down another free throw before the Lions rebounded his second shot with just five seconds to work with. UAFS put up one final shot from half court, but it was no good allowing the Crimson Storm to sneak away with a 68-66 victory.
