Crimson Storm Respond With Victory Over Arkansas Tech

A five set thriller goes the Storm's way as they took down the Golden Suns, 3-2

BETHANY, Okla. - The Crimson Storm hosted the Golden Suns of Arkansas Tech for a Friday afternoon matchup inside the Sawyer Center. In comeback fashion, Southern Nazarene took a big match over Arkansas Tech in a five set thriller, 3-2.

The two squads battled from the first serve before SNU (8-16, 4-7 GAC) took the lead thanks to kills from Whitney Bowie and Rayanna Mauldin. The Golden Suns (11-13, 4-7 GAC) responded, going on a 5-1 run a few points later to take over the lead, 13-10.

Another kill from Mauldin and a service ace from Raegan Strickland put the Crimson Storm within one. ATU continued to tack on the points going on a 7-1 run to extend their lead once more.

A kill from Tessa Henry and a Golden Suns error allowed Southern Nazarene to chip away, but Arkansas Tech remained in control. They powered down two kills and an SNU error allowed ATU to take set one, 25-19.

The Storm looked to even the score as they jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in set two. A few kills from Tessa Henry and service aces from Bowie and Emma Grace Moddelmog pushed the Storm ahead once more.

Tatum Smith then went on a serving run giving SNU a comfortable 11-4 lead. Bowie and Mauldin continued to add on the kills leaving the Crimson Storm in control. Kate Wright got in on the fun powering down a kill to go alongside another SNU ace, this time from Katelyn Branson.

The Golden Suns began to chip away with a small run cutting the Storm lead to 19-15. A few more kills from Southern Nazarene allowed them to push closer to a set victory, but ATU was not going down without a fight, cutting the deficit to just one. A kill from Strickland and an Arkansas Tech error gave SNU the second set, 25-22.

Set three was another battle, but an ace from Smith and a few more kills from Bowie and Wright gave the Storm an early 7-2 lead. An Arkansas Tech attack error and an ace from Mauldin pushed SNU ahead once more.

The Golden Suns then responded with a 6-0 run to take the lead, 13-11. The Storm continued to hang around as Kaylie Marshall and Wright notched a kill. ATU closed out the third set with a 6-1 run to take the set, 25-18.

SNU looked to stay alive in set four as they took a 10-8 lead after another ace from Moddelmog. Mauldin and Smith teamed up for a pair of kills to extend the Storm lead. Arkansas Tech continued to hang around going on a small run to stay within one.

A kill from Moddelmog and two service aces from Bowie stretched the SNU lead back to five. The Golden Suns managed to chip away once again, but Mauldin notched another kill to go alongside an ATU error to give the Crimson Storm set point.

A few more kills from Arkansas Tech cut the deficit to one, but Bowie remained dominant tacking on the final kill to give the Storm the fourth set, 25-23.

The Golden Suns dominated the fifth set early with a 7-2 lead. Another serving run from Smith put the Storm within two. Arkansas Tech remained in control, but the Crimson Storm was not done yet.

The trifecta of Bowie, Wright, and Mauldin went to work at the net once again cutting the deficit to just one. Bowie then tacked on the kill that tied the score at 11 all before going on a serving run to finish off the set.
