Crimson Storm Claim Five Set Thriller over the Reddies

SNU comes back to defeat Henderson State in five sets

BETHANY, Okla. - The Crimson Storm returned to the Sawyer Center for more GAC action as they hosted the Reddies of Henderson State. The Storm was able to secure a much needed win as they took down HSU in five sets, 3-2.

The Reddies (10-8, 2-4 GAC) jumped out to an early lead to begin the first set. A kill and service ace from Kate Wright paired with an HSU error tied the score at 4-4.

The two squads battled from there but a service ace from Emma Grace Moddelmog and another kill from Wright pushed SNU in front by two.

Henderson State later went on a costly 7-0 run to claim match point, 24-17. Wright collected one final kill before HSU powered down the final kill they needed to claim set one, 25-18.

The Reddies took an early lead once again to begin the second set. The Storm responded after kills from Wright and Rayanna Mauldin tied the score.

From there SNU carried that momentum as Whitney Bowie tallied a handful of kills to lead 12-9. Henderson State went on a 6-1 run to take back the lead. The Crimson Storm continued to battle as HSU made a few errors and a kill from Riley Richardson gave them the lead once more.

Another run from the Reddies put them back in front 24-21, but a kill from Quinn Van Maanen challenged HSU. One final kill finished off the set as Henderson State won it, 25-22.

Looking to avoid a sweep the Crimson Storm jumped out to a dominant 9-3 lead to start set three. From there Bowie and Tessa Henry teamed up for a pair of kills.

Southern Nazarene continued to dominate at the net and at the service line as Wright collected two service aces. Bowie and Mauldin powered down the final kill the Storm needed to secure the set three win, 25-16.

The two squads continued to battle for the match, but the Reddies were not going down without a fight. They pulled away with a 14-9 lead to begin set four, taking most of the momentum from SNU.

An 8-0 serving run from Rayanna Mauldin got the Sawyer Center on their feet as the Crimson Storm took back the lead 20-16. Henry and Raegan Strickland teamed up for a few more kills making an HSU comeback seem slim.

Another kill from Richardson sealed the deal for the Storm, 25-21, sending the match set five.

The battle continued as the Reddies were the first to eight. The Storm was unphased as Richardson powered down a kill and Katelyn Branson collected an ace to put SNU ahead 10-9.

A few errors from Henderson State proved costly as the Storm pushed ahead once more. Bowie tacked on one final kill on the night and Wright collected a service ace to finish off the Reddies and take the set 5 victory 15-11 and the match 3-2.
