BETHANY, Okla. — Looking to avoid the series sweep in Bethany, Southern Nazarene couldn't get the job done, falling by run rule to the Tigers (34-12, 22-8 GAC) whose 17 hits powered over the Storm (15-31, 6-24 GAC) in Bethany.
After two scoreless innings between the two squads, Ouachita Baptist was the first to strike in the third inning with a two-run homer to right field.
After two walks and a stolen base, the Tigers capitalized with a single through the left side to score another run, pushing their lead to 3-0. The Tigers could not be shaken in the third, getting a ground out and another single to bump their lead to 5-0 before Parker Presley could deliver the third out of the inning from the mound.
DJ Van Atten brought the heat per usual in the bottom third, putting up a single with the bases loaded to push Alex Leon home for SNU's first run of the ballgame. A fielder's choice allowed Irby to to trot home and SNU quickly came within three runs of the Tigers. The crowd in Bethany roared after a catcher's interference call allowed O'Shea Whiteside the trip to home plate, putting SNU behind just two runs at 5-3.
The two teams were dealing at the play through the next two innings, but each suffered out after out with no runs scored.
The Tigers made noise in the sixth with a lead-off long ball that cruised over the right field fence, bumping their lead back up to three. The noise continued for the Tigers as they put up a three-run triple with bases loaded, rocketing to a 9-3 lead. Just before the Storm could retire the side, Ouachita snuck one more run in with a single, now leading SNU 10-3.
SNU escaped run rule territory in the seventh, serving the Tigers a third out with two runners on as Oliver Wilson snagged a high ball in right field. The Storm's offensive rally was quickly denied when the Tigers achieved a double play in the bottom seventh. SNU was sent away by a fly out and the Tigers controlled their 10-3 lead moving into the eighth inning.
Ouachita Baptist awakened the run rule once more with a three run shot over the right field fence, pushing their lead to 13-3. After retiring the side, SNU could not crack out a hit at the plate, losing in eight to Ouachita Baptist by a final 13-3 score.
