BETHANY, Okla. — To close the series, Southern Nazarene faced a tough final game against Arkansas Monticello, battling a back-and-forth affair that lasted through 14 innings and a weather delay. Tied at eight a piece, the Weevils (17-12, 10-8 GAC) put up the game-winning single for a 9-8 final score, ending the series 2-1 over the Storm (14-18, 6-12 GAC).
Southern Nazarene got off to a hot start through the first two innings, kickstarted by a Cole Embrey solo home run. The Weevils put in three runs through those two innings, but a couple of UAM slip ups and a Dax Edmonds single propelled the Storm to a 6-3 lead.
Through the next five innings, SNU hit a scoring slump while the Weevils tacked on two runs to make a one-run game after the seventh at 6-5.
The two teams traded a few scores in the next two innings, but the Weevils tied the ballgame in the 9th from a walk, forcing extra innings. The score was gridlocked at seven a piece through three innings until a DJ Van Atten double plated O'Shea Whiteside to gain back the lead at 8-7.
Arkansas Monticello warded off SNU's chance a win in the 13th inning off of a fielder's choice, retying the game at 8-8. Reaching the 14th inning, SNU was unable to get a run. The Weevils took advantage in the bottom half of the inning, putting up a an RBI single to right field for the 9-8 victory.
Southern Nazarene will be back to GAC action next weekend where they host Southwestern Oklahoma State on Friday, March 31st at 2 p.m. followed by a noon doubleheader Saturday, April 1st.
