BETHANY, Okla. — Friday afternoon's wind gusts of 40 mph made it an offensive showdown in Bethany as Southern Nazarene and Southwestern Oklahoma State combined for 52 runs, the most in Great American Conference history. The Bulldogs (16-16, 9-10 GAC) exploded for an 11-run inning and 26 total hits, enough to edge the Storm (14-19, 6-13 GAC) who only got off 20 hits in the contest while suffering two errors.
Southern Nazarene faced one of its longest opening innings this season as the first inning totaled a whopping 50 minutes, highlighted by a combined 15 runs.
The Bulldogs kicked off the scoring frenzy and used the wind to their advantage, firing four home runs that produced an early 7-0 lead. The Storm were quick to answer with a few hits and runs in the bottom half of the first. Cole Embrey capped off the inning with a two-RBI homer to put the Storm ahead 8-7 after just a single inning of play.
SWOSU regained a one-run lead in the third, but two back-to-back long shots by Dax Edmonds and DJ Van Atten put the Storm back on top at 11-9 heading into the fourth inning.
The Bulldogs challenged SNU in the fifth, exploding for 11 total runs to shock SNU with the 20-11 advantage. SWOSU's fire carried over to the mound as Philip Sanders delivered back-to-back strikeouts, sending SNU back to the dugout without a run in the 5th.
SWOSU extended their lead to 10 in the sixth, but SNU was quick to cut the deficit, starting with a huge three-RBI home run off the bat of Sebastian Figga. Peyton Vinyard's triple and a Dax Edmonds single put SNU in scoring position once more and Weston Hicks finished the job, firing a long single to the left corner to plate Cole Embrey. The run put SNU behind 21-16 heading into the seventh inning.
After a scoreless seventh inning, SWOSU tacked on four runs for a 25-16 lead. After a few tough at-bats, DJ Van Atten launched one over the center field fence, gaining two RBIs and putting the Storm within seven runs at 25-18.
Woking with a seven run edge, SWOSU piled on a few runs in the ninth, highlighted by a three RBI homer to bump their lead to 30-18. SNU finally retired the side, but were unable to overcome the deficit in the final half of the inning with just two runs scored. Recording their ninth conference win of the season, SWOSU walked away with the 30-22 victory to open the series.
Southern Nazarene will face the Bulldogs once more on Saturday, April 1st for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
