Storm Drop Series Closure

No. 9 Muleriders stay on top and win series closure over Southern Nazarene

BETHANY, Okla. — In the final game of the series, Southern Nazarene fell to No. 9 Southern Arkansas with a final score of 22-7.

The Muleriders (18-7, 11-4 GAC) went on a hitting spree in the series closure, exploding for 18 hits that powered 22 runs. The Storm (13-16, 8-7 GAC) struggled to combat the offensive power of Southern Arkansas, working through multiple pitching changes through the afternoon to try and lessen the damage.

The Muleriders jumped on top first in inning one, getting a double after stealing two bases that allowed them to score two runs. Southern Nazarene earned their first run of the afternoon in the third inning after DJ Van Atten launched one over the right field fence to put SNU behind 2-1.

The Muleriders picked up the pace in the fifth off of a ground out and a homerun that was almost snagged by the leaping right fielder, Tanner Bare. The Muleriders' two runs bumped their lead up to 4-1.

Southern Nazarene struggled to close the scoring gap and Southern Arkansas continued to add on the runs. With zero outs in the top of the sixth, the Muleriders took advantage at the plate, putting up a single and getting a hit by pitch to bring in two runs. The Muleriders tacked on four more runs in the same inning off of two doubles and a fly out to bring their lead to 11-1.

Southern Nazarene cut the deficit down to eight runs in the bottom half of the sixth from a Tanner Bare double and a Tyler Broyles single. A risky bunt by the Storm allowed the Muleriders to make the double play and that was the last of the scoring for the Storm in the sixth.

Southern Arkansas made some noise in the eighth inning with back to back homeruns on back to back pitches. SNU could not shake the Mulerider's from the bump as they continued to pile on the runs, recording a total of 11 in the inning.

SNU had the final chance to close the gap, but couldn't answer the 19-run deficit. Van Atten and Carson Kinnaird were able to launch two homeruns to finish out the game, but the Muleriders finished off the series 3-0, winning Game 3, 22-7.
