OKLAHOMA CITY—The Southern Nazarene Men's Golf team competed in their first tournament of the year on Monday and Tuesday at the Lake Hefner North Golf Course. SNU put two teams in a nine team field, as well as two individuals.
The SNU "A" team finished tied for fifth overall in the tournament. They climbed one spot on the final day, and could have held sole possession of fifth place if not for a team-wide struggle on the par-3 17th hole. The team was 3-under for the day, but finished 3-over as a team on that hole.
Three Crimson Storm golfers finished even par for the tournament, placing them T-19 in the field. Brodey Claborn shot an excellent 69 in the first round, placing him at T-6. He couldn't quite keep up that play in the second and third rounds, but still shot 73-74 over rounds two and three. He capitalized on the par-5 opportunities, shooting 8-under for the 12 par-5s in the tournament.
Finishing alongside Claborn, Noah Kern also shot even par over the three rounds. He was very consistent both days, going 72-71-73. Zander Tway was the other Crimson Storm "A" team member to finish even par after putting together a fantastic 67 in round three. He did an excellent job on par-3s, shooting 1-under on all par 3s for the tournament, which tied for second overall.
Dawson Dunlap and Jaxson Northcutt rounded out the scoring for the SNU "A" team. Dunlap finished T-30 at 7-over par. He had a great final round as well, shooting 71 (-1) to climb five spots on the leaderboard, Northcutt took a T-46 finish after shooting 81-73-80.
The SNU "B" team had the Crimson Storm's highest two individual finishers. Landon Hendrix led his team as he shot 4-under, including a 3-under round three, and claimed a T-11 finish. He totaled 14 birdies in the tournament.
Sam Schmidt was the other SNU golfer to finish under-par for the tournament, shooting 1-under. Like Claborn, he took advantage of the long holes, shooting 8-under on the par-5s.
Theodor Naus took third on the "B" team after a T-34 finish at 9-over. He was consistent all three rounds at 76-75-74.
Luke Woods and Mason Sebrant shot 11-over and 16-over, respectively, for the tournament.
SNU's two competing as individuals were Eli Reutlinger and Brandon Tedder, who finished 49th and 54th, respectively.
Harding University won the tournament after an incredible 42-under team showing. They were led by the top two individuals in the tournament, Manuel Cue Vargas (-14) and Sam Tandy (-12).
Southern Nazarene now begins prep for next week's NSU Men's Golf Classic at the Muskogee Country Club. The three round, two day event is set to begin Monday Sept. 19.
