2-0 Day for the Storm

SNU cruises past OPSU in both games of their doubleheader over in Woodward

WOODWARD, Okla. — Southern Nazarene finally made it to the rescheduled Oklahoma Panhandle State doubleheader over in Woodward Tuesday afternoon, where the Storm (13-34, 6-24 GAC) added two more wins to the schedule, putting up a total of 24 hits and four homeruns from the offensive end. The Aggies (14-31, 6-15 SAC) faced two complete games by pitchers Patrick Hine and Oliver Wilson, who combined for 10 strikeouts in the doubleheader.

Game 1

The contest didn't see much action early on, but thanks to SNU pictcher Patrick Hine, the Aggies wouldn't see any the entire game as the senior only allowed them just four hits, striking out six in the process.

The Storm were gridlocked at 0 with the Aggies for the first two innings, but the 3rd inning made all the difference, starting with Tyler Broyles' single that would plate EJ Taylor for SNU's first run of the game. In the next at-bat, DJ Van Atten put up a three RBI homerun to score Colby Entwistle and Brian Brown to put them up 4-0 over OPSU.

The burst diminished for SNU in the innings after, but luckily OPSU never gained any momentum to try and challenge the Storm's four-run lead. Seven innings came quickly, resulting in the Storm's 4-0 win over the Aggies.

Van Atten changed the game with his huge three RBI homer, putting him at a 1-2 finish.

Brown had a perfect 2-2 at-bat to go along with a double while Taylor finished 1-2 and Oliver Wilson, Drake Irby, and Peyton Vinyard each finished 1-3.

Hine put up a complete game for the Storm, pitching through seven total innings and recording six strikeouts, only allowing four hits from OPSU.

Game 2

SNU and OPSU had more of a back and forth affair through the first two innings, but the Storm took control from the 4th on.

OPSU stated the game off up 2-0, but Taylor's bomb to left field would tie it 2-2. Broyles' single earned the Storm their first single of the game as he sent in Brown for the 3-2 lead.

The Aggies climbed back on top in the 2nd to take the it to 4-3. Van Atten's solo shot over the fence would tie it once more, but an error by OPSU would score Taylor for another SNU lead. Entwistle made a sneaky steal to second which would send in Brown on the throw, putting the Storm up two in the 4th.

SNU would let another one fly over the fence, this time, by Brian Brown who earned his 11th bomb on the season, sending in Cole Embrey and Jonathan Crist in the process for the 9-4 score.

Oliver Wilson was keeping the Aggies in a cold spot from the mound, leaving the offense to tack on more runs in the 6th. Crists' sacrifice fly kick started the five-run inning as Broyles scored to make it 10-4 game. Taylor's triple scored Embrey and Schow for two more runs, while Van Atten's single plated Brown and Taylor to cap it off the scoring on SNU's side, sending the score to 14-4.

The Aggies had a half inning to turn things around, but their homerun in the 7th wasn't enough, ending it 14-5 in favor of the Crimson Storm.

Brown had a heck of a day at the plate, going for 4-5 with a homerun and three RBI's. Taylor was right their with him, finishing 3-5 for four RBI's and a homer himself, along with a triple.

Van Atten put up a 2-3 finish with three RBI's and a homerun. Broyles finished 2-4 with a double and an RBI while Crist went 1-2 with a double and an RBI.

Oliver Wilson also had a complete game, pitching through seven full innings and recording four strikeouts.

SNU will close out the season with one final conference series as they head to Shawnee to face Oklahoma Baptist for a single game Friday, April 29th at 6:00 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, April 30th at 1:00 p.m.
