SNU Drops Doubleheader to No. 7 Muleriders

Storm face offensive struggles against nationally ranked Southern Arkansas as they fall in both games of their doubleheader

MAGNOLIA, Ark. — Southern Nazarene was faced with a tough task Friday afternoon as they headed across state lines to take on the No. 7 Southern Arkansas Muleriders in Magnolia, Arkansas to open another GAC series. The Muleriders (34-9, 6-23 GAC) have put up quite the season thus far, sitting atop the GAC standings with first place conference rankings in multiple statistical categories. Challenged by the intense pitching in Friday's doubleheader, the Storm (11-33, 6-23) fell 1-14 in Game 1 and 0-16 in Game to open the series.

Game 1

SNU saw a quick three outs in the 1st, leaving the Muleriders to open the inning with an early 5-0 lead.

Tyler Broyles and DJ Van Atten were able to punch in a couple of hits for the Storm in the 2nd, but they couldn't get much luck at home plate, leaving the Muleriders to advance their lead to 8-0 the next couple of innings.

SNU saw two walks Brian Brown's reach on a fielder's choice on the 5th, but still didn't see much turnaround in the scoring category. The Muleriders had everything going their way thereafter, scoring four more to put them up 12-0 over the Storm.

Van Atten put up SNU's first run of the game in exciting fashion, hitting a solo bomb to left center to end the Storm's scoring drought with a 1-12 trail in the 6th. Southern Arkansas tacked on a few more scores, bringing their lead to 14-1 with one final comeback left for the Storm.

The Muleriders' pitching continued to cause problems for SNU's hitting the rest of the way as they reached the final three outs to call it in seven, handing the No. 7 Muleriders the 14-1 win.

Van Atten led the offense with his 2-3 finish and the 6th inning homerun to put the Storm on the board.

Game 2

Southern Arkansas never let up, carrying over the offensive onslaught into Game 2.

As the Muleriders continued to tack on run after run, SNU just couldn't get anything to go their way. They saw a couple of singles, hit by pitched, and walk scattered throughout the evening, but the third out came quicker than anticipated.

SAU built up to an 8-0 by the 3rd, but cooled off the next three innings, until they exploded at the plate, putting up an eight-run 6th inning. Action diminished on both sides, ending the game with a Mulerider win of 16-0.

SNU finished with five hits that contest, brought by a collective effort of EJ Taylor, Tyler Broyles, Oliver Wilson, and DJ Van Atten.

SNU will get one more shot at SAU Saturday, April 23rd for a single game starting at noon.
