SNU Splits Doubleheader with Weevils

SNU shakes off a Game 1 loss with a Game 2 victory in their doubleheader with UAM

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene geared up for their conference doubleheader against Arkansas-Monticello Friday afternoon where they split the pair of games with the Weevils (17-20, 12-14 GAC) with a Game 1 loss of 6-18, followed by a Game 2 victory of 11-6. The Storm (10-29, 6-20 GAC) made history after their Game 2 victory, recording a win in four consecutive conference series', the first time for any SNU squad in the Division II era.

Game 1

The Weevils earned an automatic double after they smacked one to the back that bounced up and over the fence, sending one in for the early 1-0 score.

Cole Embrey tied it with a lead-off solo bomb to left field, tallying his fourth on the season. Noah Ellis' double would allow EJ Taylor to advance home for the 2-1 lead. SNU saw two quick outs thereafter, retiring the side.

The Weevils were stalled in the second, leaving Jonathan Crist to put up another solo homer for the Storm to extend their lead to 3-1.

The 3rd inning was silent on both sides, but action quickly returned in the fourth, beginning with a Weevil homerun to take the score to 2-3. Monticello tied it 3-3 off of an SNU throwing error, then reclaimed the lead in the with an RBI single for the 4-3 score. UAM's lead grew further with a three-run homer to put them up 7-3.

SNU had a chance to do some damage in the 4th with the bases loaded and Brian Brown at bat. The Weevils were able to deliver a strike out, sending the Storm back to the field to open the 5th inning.

The bombs continued to launch for UAM as they put up two more homers to send the score to 9-3.

Colby Entwistle slugged one over the center field fence for his 12th homerun of the season to cut Monticello's lead back down to five. Shortstop Drake Irby pulled of a terrific bunt that grazed just inside the left field line, earning him a trip to first to advance Tyler Broyles to second. The Weevils pulled off the third and final out of the inning to, to stump the Storm, still up 9-4.

The Weevils blasted another for two more runs, followed by double to plate one more, growing to an eight run lead in the 6th. They tacked on two more that inning to earn the 14-4 advantage, but Parker Presely came in for relief, delivering a strikeout with the bases loaded to retire the Weevils' hot hitting.

Presley sent UAM into a hitting drought with two strikeouts and fly out, leaving SNU the chance to erase the run rule in sight.

Embrey delivered, reaching on a Weevils' fielding error to advance Tyler Broyles home for the 5-14 trail.

UAM bumped up their lead in the 8th, moving it to 18-5. Entwistle tried to stop the bleeding with a solo shot to left to make it 6-18. SNU saw a ground out and a pop up to reach the third and final out of the game, handing the Game 1 win to Monticello 6-18.

Entwistle put another game with a pair of shots over the fence for a 2-5 finish, marking his third consecutive game with two homeruns.

Embrey was also a part of the homerun club that game, recording one that afternoon for a 3-4 finish.

Crist recorded his first homer of the season, contributing to a 1-4 at-bat.

Ellis added an RBI to his name with a 1-5 finish while Broyles finished 3-4 and Irby finished 2-4.

Game 2

Both sides had a slower start to Game 2, but UAM put up the first run of the game in 2nd to start off with the lead.

The Storm were lighting it up in the 3rd, putting up a total of six hits, starting with Embrey's single that sent in Broyles for the 1-1 tie. Taylor and Brown both put up singles, resulting in two RBI's for a 3-1 lead. Entwistle caused a rundown between first and second base, leading EJ Taylor to sneak home to put SNU up 4-1.

The Weevils tacked on two more runs in the 4th to trail SNU 3-4, but Embrey and Taylor quickly hushed the comeback with back-to back homeruns for a combined three-runs. DJ Van Atten and Weston Hicks both put up a double for two RBI's while Broyles singled up the middle shortly after to send in Weston Hicks, bumping the lead to 10-3.

Monticello snuck in three runs in the 6th, closing SNU's gap down to four at 10-6. Van Atten grounded out with the bases loaded, sending Embrey in for the score and the Storm led 11-6 with the final inning to follow.

In the 7th with bases loaded, Monticello cracked on down to shortstop, but Irby snagged it in the air to get the first out of the inning. The Weevils reached the last two, retiring the side, handing the second game to the Crimson Storm with a final 11-6 victory.

Cole Embrey recorded another homerun this game, finishing 3-4 with three RBI's while EJ Taylor putting up the other homer with two RBI's and a 2-3 finish.

Van Atten recorded two RBI's with his 1-4 finish while Broyles and Brown each finishing 2-3 with an RBI a piece.

Payne Maga got the win over UAM in Game 2 with his two strikeouts. Hutch Underwood picthed in the final inning, allowing no runs with a strikeout.

SNU will close out the series with the Weevils for a single game on Saturday, April 16th at noon.
