SNU Drops Series Finale to Newman

Storm baseball falls 2-15 and 11-12 to Jets

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene's baseball squad was halted Monday afternoon as Newman finished out the series finale taking both games back to Wichita, leaving SNU to finish out the series 1-4.

Game 1

The Storm had a slower start in Game 1, leaving Newman to get ahead 4-0 in the second inning as they struck one out to left field to send three Jets across home plate. Newman tallied four more runs by the fourth inning, but SNU combated the lead as a Dalton Tarrant double plated DJ Van Atten and Colby Entwistle to close out the fourth inning behind 2-9 to the Jets.

Play was silent in the fifth and sixth as both teams struggled to gain any runs. This changed as Newman piled on six more runs in the seventh, surpassing their 10th run of the game to result in a run-rule as the final score read 15-2 in favor of the Jets.

Tarrant led the Storm offense, finishing 1-3 at the plate to go along with two RBI's. Entwistle and Van Atten each collected one run a piece while Crist finished 2-3 in Game 1.

Kasen Jackson L (0-1) spent the most time at the mound, pitching through 3.2 innings. Zach Isham saw action through 2.1 innings, collecting three strikeouts and allowing two runs. Jacob Owen and Oliver Wilson also got a chance at the bump combining for a total of four runs allowed.

Game 2

Things started to heat up in the final game as runs were traded back and forth after both squads cracked a combined 10 home runs.

Newman struck the first diamond round-trip, starting their lead off at 3-0.

Entwistle's cracked one far left, giving SNU their first homer of the game, sending in EJ Taylor to follow close beyond Newman at 2-3.

The Storm were stilled in the second inning, leaving Newman to collect an additional three runs, courtesy of two bombs sent out by the Jets.

A gutsy comeback was at the hands of the Storm as they left Newman scoreless in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. Their offensive agenda was relentless, as Taylor got a homer himself, allowing Embrey a trip across the plate in the third. Brian Brown erupted in the fourth, smacking one far down center field, putting SNU behind one run (5-6) to the Jets. SNU finally broke the deficit, as Entwistle's triple plated Taylor and Embrey, giving the Storm their first lead of game at 7-6.

SNU continued to put the hammer down on the Jets as Brown sent another bomb to left field, sending Tarrant home to tack on another run. Embrey would cap off the 5th inning with a single down the middle, giving Irby the trip across home and SNU held a four-run lead over Newman (10-6) moving into the sixth

A Newman home run and double would result in four total RBI's and the Storm were robbed the lead as Newman tied the ballgame at 10 a piece.

Another Jets' homer would lead to two more runs and Newman was up 12-10. At the bottom of the 7th, SNU answered with a hot shot straight to right field as Weston Hicks danced his way to home plate. SNU's last two appearances at bat did not go as planned, leaving Newman to scrape by with a one-run victory over SNU (12-11).

Brown was off the charts offensively, tallying two homer's and three RBI's while finishing 2-4.

Entwistle also had a hot hand at bat, collecting a homer of his own and four RBI's to finish 2-3 that game.

Taylor and Hicks each tallied a home run while combining for three RBI's and finishing 2-4 and 1-1 respectively. Crist was another notable, finishing 2-5 that afternoon.

Casey Minchey pitched a total of four innings resulting in three strikeouts. Hutch Underwood saw one inning of action, only allowing two runs. Cobey Gorrell (L, 0-1) rounded out the duties on the mound, also finishing with three strikeouts and four runs allowed.

The Storm are back to action next Friday (Feb. 11) and Saturday (Feb. 12) for more doubleheader action as they welcome Northeastern State to Bethany. Game times will be 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. both days.
