BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene returned to Feland Field for the first time this season, dropping their doubleheader to Northeastern in the first half of the series. The Riverhawks (3-2, 0-0 MIAA) put up an unstoppable fifth inning to take the first game 4-0, carrying that over into the second game as their four-run 7th inning closed the game with a 6-3 victory over the Storm (1-5, 0-0 GAC)
Game 1
Northeastern got on the board first in the opening inning, but the Storm took advantage of their fielding error in the second, allowing Brian Brown to hit home plate, putting the score at 1-1.
Another error by the Riverhawks gave Storm the lead at 2-1 in the third inning as Colby Entwistle ran in for the score.
Moving into the fourth, Cole Embrey singled to allow Jonathan Crist to make his short trip around the bases for SNU's third run of the game, sitting at 3-1 over Northeastern.
The Storm were tripped up at the top of the fifth as Northeastern built up their lead, piling on three more runs to make it 6-3.
SNU was unable to answer offensively the remainder of the game, leaving the Riverhawks to take Game 1 of the doubleheader with a final score of 6-3.
Brown gave the Storm a strong start, giving SNU their first run while finishing 1-3. Entwistle also helped the Storm offensive with his one run and 1-4 finish. Crist also tallied a run for the Storm.
Hutch Underwood received the start at the mound, tallying one inning pitched and recording one strikeout. Cobey Gorrell and Jacob Owen were some of the relief members, pitching a combined two innings and totaling two strikeouts between the two. Oliver Wilson had a good showing at the bump, pitching 1.1 innings, recording three strikeouts, and no runs.
Game 2
A biting wind caused the game to grow cold the first five innings as it was a 0-0 standstill with no team gaining an offensive edge.
The Riverhawks finally broke free of the stall, scoring the game's first run in the 6th inning. SNU matched their pace as Weston Hicks singled to score Drake Irby, tieing the game at 1-1.
The Riverhawks had a blistering final inning, putting up four runs to extend their advantage. Unable to combat the Riverhawks' lead, the Storm fell in Game 2 with a final score of 1-5.
Hicks led at bat, going 1-1 that evening while tallying an RBI in the process. Irby finished 1-1 that game while Brian Brown finished 2-2.
Payne Maga was a force on the mound, pitching through 4.2 innings while tallying seven strikeouts and allowing zero runs. Cobey Gorrell and Casey Minchey also pitched, combining for 1.4 innings pitched, two strikeouts, and eight allowed runs.
The Storm get one more crack at the Riverhawks Saturday, February 12th, for another doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
