Muleriders Shut-Out Storm Late

The Crimson Storm give SAU everything they can handle as the Storm drop game one of the series 6-2 on Saturday evening in Bethany.

BETHANY – The Crimson Storm gave the Muleriders everything they could ask for as the Southern Nazarene Baseball (5-26, 5-20 GAC) team held their own against the GAC's no. 1 ranked team, Southern Arkansas University (22-10, 18-7 GAC). The two battled closely until late as the SAU pulled away with a 6-2 win in game one of the Great American Conference series between the clubs on Saturday evening in Bethany.

Weather caused the doubleheader, initially planned for Friday, to be played on Sunday and the single-game to take place today.

SNU played some of their best baseball all season, led by freshman Payne Maga (L, 1-6), who took the mound to strikeout a season-high 10 batters. This strikeout count was the best of Maga's young career as he allowed four runs through 7.2 innings of action.

After two innings of play, Southern Arkansas built a two-run lead as they had their eyes set on a clear path to the promised land. A Clay Lockett single into left field blocked the Mulerider's sights as Peyton Vinyard crossed home plate to put the Storm on the board in the 3rd inning. Then, after a scoreless 4th, Lockett again aided SNU with a score of his own off a wild pitch, bringing the tally to 2-2.

However, SAU closed the door on the Storm's momentum as the Muleriders tacked four more on by the end of the 8th and cemented their 6-2 victory.

Shortstop Clay Lockett led SNU from the plate as he finished 2-for-4, scored a run, and collected an RBI. Eric Gutierrez and Peyton Vinyard were also efficient as the two went 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively. Vinyard also managed to cross home plate one time for the Crimson Storm.

Other notables were EJ Taylor and Brian Brown, who each went 1-for-3 on the day. Two other players took the bump besides Payne Maga, Zach Birkle, and Kasen Jackson. Birkle came in as relief for Maga to pitch for under an inning, and Jackson rounded off the work with a two-strikeout performance.

Southern Nazarene will take the positives from today and apply them to tomorrow's series-ending doubleheader, starting at noon.
