BETHANY – The Southern Nazarene Baseball team (5-28, 5-22 GAC) concluded their Great American Conference series with the Southern Arkansas University Muleriders (24-10, 19-7 GAC) in a couple of losses on Sunday afternoon in Bethany. SAU beat the Crimson Storm by scores of 16-2 and 13-2.
Game 1
The game sat gridlocked at 0-0 until the Muleriders erupted for a seven-run inning in the 3rd, giving them a 7-0 lead. SNU finally got on the board with an EJ Taylor solo shot over the left-field wall, his fifth home run of the season.
Southern Nazarene would not score again until the 7th inning when Elijah Brady reached home off a Colby Entwistle single. However, SAU's lead by this pointed resulted in the contest ending with the run rule after seven innings of play.
From the plate, EJ Taylor led SNU statistically as he turned in a 2-for-3 performance and a home run. Freshman Jake Schow, Jarrett Phillips, and Eric Guiterrez each went 1-for-3 on the day, while Elijah Brady finished 1-for-2. Brady also crossed the plate once.
The Crimson Storm bullpen struggled to find their rhythm as six different players made an appearance in today's contest. Brett Rexroad (L, 0-4) got the start and clocked the most time as he pitched through 2.2 innings, striking out three and allowing six runs.
Brandon Rezek stepped in for 2.0 innings to allow three runs and collect one strikeout. Jacob Johnson, Adrian Flores, Zach Birkle, and Caleb DeSouza rounded off the work for SNU.
Game 2
Southern Arkansas' good fortune continued into the finale as the Muleriders got on top of the Storm early, scoring seven runs through the 4th inning. SNU woke up to put points on the board when Cole Embrey hammered a two-run shot over the left-field wall to give the Storm two scores.
Unfortunately, the offensive power of SAU proved to be too much as Southern Arkansas tacked on six more scores to leave the tally at 13-2 at the contest's end.
Cole Embrey led the Storm's offensive attack as he was responsible for the only scores of the day, going 1-for-3 and hitting a two-run homer, his second of the season. Dylan Scalice was efficient was from the plate as he finished 1-for-2 and scored a run in his outing. Colby Entwistle turned in a 2-for-4 performance, while Tyler Broyles and Jarrett Phillips both finished 1-for-3.
Elijah Brady and Tyler Graves (L, 2-7) saw the most action on the bump today for SNU as they pitched threw 3.0 and 2.2 innings, respectively. Both would also collect a couple of strikeouts a piece and allow a total of 10 runs. Kasen Jackson concluded today's rotation as he threw through 1.1 innings and allowed three runs.
Southern Nazarene will be back in action on Tuesday as they'll travel to Tahlequah, Okla. for an out-of-conference contest against the Northeastern State Riverhawks (22-10, 19-7 MIAA). First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
