EDMOND, Okla. - The Southern Nazarene Baseball team would make the shortest road trip of their season to Edmond to take on an out-of-conference foe, the University of Central Oklahoma, on windy Tuesday night.
The wind would not aid the Crimson Storm (0-9, 0-6 GAC) as they struggled to get their bats to comply with the baseball in a 17-7 loss to offensive-powered Bronchos (4-3, 2-1 MIAA).
UCO would get on the board in a hurry as they managed to compile seven total runs by the 3rd inning. SNU woke up to turn the tide when an EJ Taylor single would score Cole Embrey and Elijah Brady. Confidence continued to thrive when Jarrett Phillips launched a ball over the left-field wall to bring the score to 8-3 at the top of the 4th.
It wasn't until the 7th inning that Southern Nazarene showed signs of life as they would tack on four runs to cut into the UCO lead. It started when the Bronchos brought Elijah Brady across home plate after walking EJ Taylor with loaded bases. Brian Brown would then come up to bat and double into left-center to bring three runners home.
Unfortunately, the Bronchos would shut to door on this spark of life as their lead was insurmountable by this time.
EJ Taylor would lead SNU offensively as he finished with three RBIs while batting 1-for-3. Jarrett Phillips would also register an RBI when he brought himself home on a solo shot while going 1-for-3 on the day.
Other notables were Clay Lockett and Cole Embrey, who would each go 2-for-3 from the plate. Embrey would also round the bases to score twice while Lockett crossed home plate once.
Eight different pitchers would take the mound in Edmond as SNU struggled to find a reliable source. Payne Maga, Jacob Johnson, Patrick Hine, and Jacob Owen all clocked the same amount of time on the bump. Maga would be credited with the loss, bringing his season record to 0-2. Travis Herriott, Jacob Owen, Kasen Jackson, Brandon Rezek, and Adrian Flores would round the heavy rotation off today. Flores and Owen were the only two to collect a strikeout in the contest.
Southern Nazarene will look to rebound as they will play host to Southwestern Oklahoma State (4-3, 3-3 GAC) in a weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
