Oklahoma City, Okla. – What a long day of baseball it was as the Southern Nazarene Baseball team welcomed Southwestern Oklahoma State into town for a weekend GAC series. Although the Storm (1-10, 1-7 GAC) fell 14-3 in the first game, they roared back to bulldoze the Bulldogs (5-4, 4-4 GAC) 8-2 on Saturday night.
The beginning of the first game didn't favor SNU as SWOSU scored eight unanswered runs by the end of the 4
th inning, granting them an 8-0 lead.
In the 5
th, Freshman
Colby Entwistle hit a three-run homerun to finally put the Storm on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, this was the offensive peak game for SNU as SWOSU went on to score six more runs in the game to win 14-3.
Despite the loss,
Colby Entwistle lit up the stat sheet as he recorded three RBIs, two hits, and a run. Another notable was
Tanner Bare who had one hit and one run.
Patrick Hine made the start on the mound for the Storm as he struck out six batters but allowed six runs. A plethora of pitchers came in relief for the Storm as
Jacob Johnson,
Kasen Jackson,
Adrian Flores, Zack Birkle,
Payne Maga,
Austin Slate, and Travis Herriot all spent time on the bump. Jackson and Maga struck out two batters apiece while Johnson and Flores collected one each.
The second game started completely different than the first as
Clay Lockett managed to break the seal with a score off a wild pitch.
Later in the 1
st,
Brian Brown hit a ground ball to the pitcher, which allowed
Colby Entwistle to score the Storm's second run of the game.
EJ Taylor would then score off of a passed ball while another SWOSU error brought
Jarrett Phillips home.
Tanner Bare rounded off the crazy inning as he scored off another error, bringing the Storm lead to 6-0 at the end of the 1
st.
Southern Nazarene's success in the inaugural inning was no fluke as
Jarrett Phillips blasted a two-run homer over the left-field fence to bring himself and
EJ Taylor home. SNU now led by eight runs, their largest of the season.
The Bulldogs finally got on the board in the 5th, cutting SNU's lead to 8-1. Southwestern scored another run, but they were unable to slow the momentum of the Storm as Southern Nazarene collected their first win of the season, 8-2.
Jarrett Phillips was the most instrumental in this win as he put together two RBIs, one hit, and crossed the plate twice.
EJ Taylor also starred as well collecting two runs and one hit while
Eric Gutierrez finished with two hits and a scored run.
Triston Graves manned the mound for majority of the game as he faced 24 batters and allowed just six hits. In his impressive outing, Graves would record four strikeouts in the 5.1 innings of action he saw.
Elijah Brady came in as relief to allow three hits, one run, and strike out three batters.
The Crimson Storm will look to keep their momentum going as they play Southwestern in the series finale tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
