BETHANY – Southern Nazarene welcomed Henderson State into Bethany on Saturday to round off their weekend series at Feland Field.
SNU would drop both games against HSU as the Reddies had the upper hand in all facets of the game. A 24-12 final in the first game and then an 8-1 score in the second, proved that Henderson planned to return to Arkadelphia with a couple wins.
Offensive and defensive woes would plague the Crimson Storm in both games as they struggled to get anything going. Ultimately, unrhythmic play would cost SNU as they finished the day winless.
In the first game, Southern Nazarene hopped out to a 1-0 lead, but would not be able to hold on to it as HSU piled on five runs in the 2
nd. Then, the Reddies would tack on 10 runs by the end of the 4
th inning, leaving the score at 10-5. It seemed as though SNU would be able to cut into the lead until Henderson put together a nine-run inning in the 5
th.
Still, the Crimson Storm didn't lose hope as they put up seven runs in a comeback effort, but HSU would close the door as the scoreboard read 25-12 by the end of the last pitch.
Elijah Brady (0-2) got the start on the mound as he turned in 2.1 innings of work and two strikeouts. Five other Storm pitchers would see action today as SNU looked for an answer on the mound. Most notably was
Brendan Boily, who pitched 2.1 innings and struck out four batters.
Jarrett Phillips led the charge at the plate for SNU as he was a perfect 3-3 and smashed two homeruns.
Peyton Vinyard also consistently connected with the ball as he went 3-4, scored a run, and brought in two runners.
Austin Glock was the only other Storm player to hit a homerun as he turned in a 1-3 performance, while also scoring two runs.
Carlos Michel was 1-4 with a couple RBI's while
Christian Thorpe was also 1-3 and scored two runs.
For the second game, the battle was more close-knit as the score read 1-1 by the end of the 5
th inning. Then Henderson State would find their groove as they would compile seven runs in the 6
th inning and not look back.
Triston Graves (2-4) would head things on the rubber for SNU as he pitched for 5.1 innings and struck out four batters.
Ryan Lowery would come in for a short amount a time and face three batters until
Adrian Flores came in to round things off. Flores saw action in 1.1 innings and would strike out one.
At the plate,
Brian Brown and
Colten Cassida would both go 1-2 in the game while
Peyton Vinyard wen 1-3.
Southern Nazarene will make the quick turnaround, on Tuesday, to face the Newman Jets at Feland Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
