Storm Fall to Newman

SNU Baseball drops non-conference battle with Newman 11-5

BETHANY – Southern Nazarene took a break from conference play on Wednesday afternoon as they took on the Newman Jets and fell 11-5 at Feland Field.

The Crimson Storm (6-17) tallied 11 hits in the contest but the Jets (7-15) had theirs clicking on a higher note. They also tallied 11 hits but SNU's four errors in the field is what made the difference in the game. Head coach Grant Ledbetter elected to give his bullpen some extra action in the non-conference battle as eight different pitchers saw at least 1.0 inning of action. Noah Serrano got the start on the mound but Brendan Boily took his third loss of the season. Austin Slate, Brandon Rezek, Zach Birkle, Connor Pasby, Landon Walker and Jarrett Phillips all saw action on the bump for SNU as well.

Carlos Michel and Jarrett Phillips led the way at the dish for SNU as Michel went 3-for-5 while Phillips went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Clay Lockett finished 2-for-4 with a run scored while Caleb DeSouza came in off the bench to finish 1-for-3 with a run scored as well.

Southern Nazarene got the party started in the bottom of the first when Lockett scored on a wild pitch to give the Storm an early 1-0 advantage. That lead wouldn't last long as Newman came back in the top of the second with five runs to take a 5-1 lead. The Jets added another score in the top of the third to extend it to 6-1.

SNU came back with runs in the fourth and fifth inning to cut it to 6-3 before the Jets pushed a couple more across the plate in the sixth to increase their lead to 8-3. The Storm got two more in the bottom of the seventh when Phillips single scored Brian Brown and Landon Walker's sacrifice fly scored DeSouza to cut the lead to 8-5. Newman added three more runs in the final two innings to balloon their lead to 11-5 and never looked back as they closed out SNU in Bethany.

Southern Nazarene will hit the road this weekend and get back to GAC play as they travel to Russellville to battle Arkansas Tech on Friday-Saturday. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
