A Bartlesville Three-Peat?

SNU returns to GAC Championships looking to defend their back-to-back titles

3/4/2020 10:51:00 AM

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – The past two postseasons for Southern Nazarene have simply been a dream. The type of dream that one simply never wants to wake up from as they became the first team in the history of the Great American Conference to win back-to-back tournament titles inside the Bruin Fieldhouse.

They also became the first team in GAC history to win back-to-back GAC Tournament titles ON TOP OF winning back-to-back GAC Regular Season titles as well. One year later? SNU looks to pull off something that would likely be talked about for the next 50 years or more. They look for their third straight title and third straight automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

SNU finished the year 23-7 and 17-5 in the GAC as they are now a combined 75-14 and 56-10 in conference play in the last three seasons. This type of dominance is irregular, at any level. Adam Bohac, the two-time reigning GAC Coach of the Year, is in his 12th season as head coach for the Crimson Storm. Bohac and company locked down the No. 1 seed in the GAC Championships for the third consecutive season as they are set to battle No. 8 seed Ouachita Baptist on Thursday evening at 5:45 p.m. inside the Bruin Fieldhouse.

They are led by 2018 GAC Player of the Year and three-time First Team All-GAC selection, Jhonathan Dunn, who averages a league-best 26.1 points per game on an unbelievable 52 percent shooting from the floor. Dunn also ranks second in all of NCAA Division II in total points scored with 784 and fourth in points per game average. He has shattered multiple records across the GAC and in SNU history this season as he holds the all-time scoring record and career 3-pointers made for both.

The two-time First Team All-GAC and last year's GAC Tournament Most Valuable Player Micah Speight will be anchoring the Crimson Storm offense. He averages a career-best 17.5 points on 43 percent shooting as well as 5.5 assists per game as well. This season, Speight broke the GAC career steals record with 212 on his resume entering Bartlesville.

It'll be a familiar foe in the first round for SNU as they are set to battle Ouachita for the fifth consecutive season in the quarterfinals. SNU is 2-2 against the Tigers, losing their first two quarterfinal games before winning the last two. Most notably last year in overtime, when the Storm squeaked by courtesy of a clutch bucket by Speight with less than five seconds to play to force the game to OT. In the regular season, SNU split the season series with Ouachita, dropping the first meeting in Arkadelphia 84-78 before coming back to beat the Tigers by 23 inside the Sawyer Center.

If SNU goes on to win on Thursday night, the Crimson Storm will meet the winner of No. 4 seed Oklahoma Baptist and No. 5 seed East Central, both of which SNU split the season series with this year. On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 seed Southeastern Oklahoma State will battle No. 7 seed Southern Arkansas, while Henderson State secured the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 seed Arkansas-Monticello.

The Savage Storm and Muleriders lead things off on Thursday at 12:00 p.m. while SNU takes the floor at 5:45 p.m. The Bison and Tigers will meet on Friday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. while the Reddies and Weevils follow that game at 2:15 p.m. on Friday. If they advance, SNU will play the semifinal contest on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and the championship game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
