BETHANY, Okla. - What was supposed to be a day of rain, turned into a day of storms. Southern Nazarene storms that is, as SNU rounded off their weekend series with Oklahoma Panhandle State with a 4-2 and 6-5 win on Sunday afternoon.Â
The relocation of Saturday's doubleheader played no part in the SNU's (4-4, 0-0 GAC) play as they were able to safely put away the Aggies of OPSU (1-7, 0-0 SAC) on Sunday.Â
Junior
Triston Graves took the mound for the entirety of the first game, striking out five batters and only allowing two runs. The win today gives Graves a record 1-1. To accompany the impressive play of Graves, a handful of Crimson Storm players got things rolling to cement their win in the first game. Among those was
Tyler Broyles, who went 2-3 from the plate and scored two runs for the Storm. Meanwhile,
Colten Cassida would register two RBI's and
Clay Lockett went 1-3 with an RBI. Other notables were
Carlos Michel who brought in a run and
Eric Gutierrez who was 1-3 with a scored run.
Oklahoma Panhandle would get on the board first as they scored in the 1st inning. However, this did not rattle the confidence of Southern Nazarene as they were able to notch a run as
Tyler Broyles scored off a
Colten Cassida single into center field. After a score from the Aggies in the 3rd, the Crimson Storm answered with two runs from scores by Broyles and
Jarrett Phillips. SNU would put a stamp on their lead as
Carlos Michel flew one out into left field to bring in
Eric Gutierrez.Â
As for the second game, things were a bit tougher. OPSU came out swinging their bats as they built a 4-1 lead by the end of the 3rd inning. After a couple scoreless innings, SNU erupted with a four run inning in the bottom of the 6th. Then, in dramatic fashion,
Landon Walker would execute a flawless bunt, sending
Zac Brown home and completing a walk-off score to end the Saturday for the Storm.Â
Statisically for this game, Lockett, Walker, and Cassida would take care of all the RBI's. Lockett went 2-4 with two RBI's while Walker accounted for two RBI's and a run scored. Cassida would go 1-2 while also bringing in two runners. Other notables were
Carlos Michel who scored a run and
Tyler Broyles who went 2-3, scoring two runs.Â
On the mound, it was
Brandon Rezek who was accredited with the win, starting his season total at 1-0. In the 4.1 innings he pitched, Rezek struck out three batters and only allowed one run. Before Rezek took the mound,
Adrian Flores pitched for 2.2 innings, collecting a strikeout.Â
This positive weekend will be a boost of confidence as Southern Nazarene will prepare to travel to Alva on Friday and Saturday to battle with Northwestern Oklahoma State University (2-5, 0-0 GAC). First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm on Friday and 1:00 pm on Saturday.
