BETHANY, Okla - Even though field conditions prevented the Crimson Storm from playing at Feland Field, there was nothing that could stop SNU from putting on a show for the home crowd and getting their first couple wins of the season.Â
SNU welcomed Oklahoma Panhandle State (1-5, 0-0 SAC) into Bethany, rather Putnam City High school, and had them leave with a sour taste in their mouths as the Storm (2-4, 0-0 GAC) were able to complete a 2-0 sweep of the Aggies on Saturday afternoon. Southern Nazarene had the bats rolling as they were able to post seven and nine run games in the double-header, the most runs scored in games so far this season.Â
In the first game of the doubleheader, it was the impressive play of SNU's ace, Junior
Brett Rexroad (1-0) that led the way. Rexroad pitched the entire seven innings while striking out four batters and allowing one run. On the day, he faced a total of 28 batters. To combat Rexroad, it was the bats of
Carlos Michel,
Brian Brown, and
Clay Lockett that made the most noise. Michel went 2-3 from the plate while collecting an RBI and scoring a run.
Brian Brown was 2-4 on the day, brought a runner in and also scored a run. Lockett would round out the group with an RBI and score of his own. Freshman
Tyler Broyles made an impact as he went 1-3, bringing in a runner and scoring a run for SNU.Â
What seemed like a neck-and-neck competition going into the bottom of the 4th inning, quickly changed as the Crimson Storm erupted with five runs off of a few solid hits to make the score 6-1. Rexroad and the rest of the team had their eyes set on victory as they put up a strong defensive front, not allowing the Aggies to score any more points after the one run scored in the top of the second.Â
The story would stay the same from the second game as SNU had no intentions of letting of the gas. However, the Oklahoma Panhandle did come back with vengeance to start things off. The pace of this game was a bit slower as the Storm led 2-1 going into the second inning. A fire lit in the bellies of the Aggies as they put up five runs, highlighted by a three-run homer by Luis Rodriguez. Still, SNU neglected to bat an eye as
Clay Lockett would belt out his first homer of the season in the bottom of the second to bring in two runs.
Southern Nazarene would again apply the pressure as they scored four runs in the bottom of the third to have their lead sit at 8-6. SNU would only allow one more run in by OPSUÂ as they finalized the game at 9-7.Â
Junior Bredan Boily would get the start on the mound this game as he was able to strikeout two batters in the 1.2 innings he pitched. However, It was the arm of Trevor Smith (1-0) that shined as he struck out four batters and only allowed one run in the 5.1 innings he was apart of. Offensively,
Clay Lockett would answer the call as he homered and brought in two runs, going 2-3 from the plate.
Eric Gutierrez and
Landon Walker were also extremely efficient as they combined for three RBI's and three scored runs.Â
Southern Nazarene will cap off their weekend on Sunday as they battle Oklahoma Panhandle State again in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.Â
