CLEBURNE, TX - Southern Nazarene opened their 2020 campaign in Cleburne, Texas at the Alpine Fresh-4-Him Classic on Friday morning.
With 90% of the roster being new faces, the Crimson Storm (0-1, 0-0 GAC) are hopeful for a prosperous season as some new flavor will bring new perspective. Unfortunately, this fresh reveal was spoiled by the Colorado Christian Cougars (1-0, RMAC) by a score of 11-6 on Friday.
The Crimson Storm's ace,
Brett Rexroad, took the mound in the opener and allowed three runs in the loss. Rexroad threw 93 pitches in the 5.1 innings he pitched in, and allowed two runs while striking out five batters.
Elijah Brady,
Noah Serrano, and
Landon Walker came in to relieve Rexroad. In the middle of the fifth inning, Serrano came in to retire two outs, allowing two hits and two runs in his tenure. Relief pitcher
Noah Serrano took the loss for SNU as he allowed five runs in the 8th inning. Serrano also did chart one strike-out in his short time.
Landon Walker then came in to close out the game for Storm, allowing two hits and one run allowed.
Redshirt Junior
Austin Glock led the way at the plate for Southern Nazarene as he went 3-for-4 while scoring a run and notching three RBI's. Junior
Clay Lockett went 3-for-5 from the plate and scored a run.
Junior
Jarrett Phillips went 1-for-1 and accounted for three RBI's, while
Connor Pasby went 1-for-4 from the plate. Catcher
Tyler Broyles was the last of the Storm to get a hit as he completed his day going 1-for-5 at the plate.
Southern Nazarene got out to a hot start as they scored five of their six runs in the third inning. Colorado Christian then answered by chiming in two of their own in the bottom half of the third inning. The game remained scoreless for a couple more innings until the Cougars broke the silence with a solo shot into right field to bring the score to 5-3.
The seventh inning began when
Brian Brown being was hit by a pitch, landing a spot on first base. After a bunt from
Carlos Michel that grounded out to the pitcher,
Austin Glock was hit by a pitch.
Tyler Broyles then singled out right field, advancing Brown to third base. It was the hit from
Jarrett Phillips into center-field that sent Brown home, scoring the last run for SNU.
Things began to fall apart in the bottom of the 7th and 8th as Colorado Christian scored eight unanswered runs to take the lead 11-6 at the top of the 9th, which ended with three Storm players striking out.
