SNU Falls in DH At Cleburne

SNU goes in 0-2 in Saturday's double header in the Alpine Fresh 4 Him Classic.

CLEBURNE, Texas - It was a tough atmosphere for Southern Nazarene baseball as they welcomed the second day of the "Alpine Fresh 4 Him Classic" with a double header against the University of Mary and Rogers State.

In a mid-day game beginning at little after noon, The Crimson Storm (0-3, 0-0 GAC) fell 12-5 to the University of Mary (1-2, 0-0 NSIC) and then 14-3 to Rogers State (2-0, 0-0 MIAA) to round off the day.

In the first game of the doubleheader against the University of Mary, Southern Nazarene got off to a 1-0 start in the first inning, but saw a rotation of batters come through on the opposite side as the Marauders poured in three runs in the 3rd inning. SNU would answer back with four more runs, but the nine runs scored by the end of the 8th inning proved to be too much as they UMary took home the victory.

Junior Brandon Boily took the mound in the opener for the Storm against the Marauders as he collected three strikeouts and allowed five runs. Boily was accredited with the loss in this first matchup. Austin Slate would then come in as relief and strikeout one batter while allowing two runs. Of the next three pitchers who came in, Zach Birkle, Trever Smith, and Landon Walker, Smith received the bulk of the work. Smith pitched 3.1 innnings, striking out two batters while allowing two runs.

Brian Brown led SNU statistically at the plate as went 3-for-5, scoring once and bringing in another. Other notables were Clay Lockett, Eric Gutierrez, and Tyler Broyles. Of those, Lockett and Gutierrez were able to account for one run and an RBI a piece. Broyles was able to collect one RBI.

For the second game against Rogers State, Triston Graves had a rather shaky start to open play for SNU as he allowed 12 runs in the 2.0 innings he pitched and was credited with the loss. However, in his short tenure, he was able to strikeout three batters. Zach Birkle would come in to relieve Graves, but to much avail, the bleeding was too much as he allowed two more runs. Noah Serrano would come on for 1.1 innings, allowing no runs.

After just the third inning, Rogers State had built a 13-0 lead. Struggles for SNU would continue despite two runs in the fourth, as the Hillcats would add on to their lead with one more run to make the final score, 14-3.

In three at-bats, Brian Brown was able to score twice while going 1-3 from the plate. Carlos Michel would also cross the plate for the Storm once while going 1-4 and accounting for one RBI. Austin Glock and Jarrett Phillips both collected an RBI a piece as well.

Southern Nazarene will conclude the Alpine Fresh 4Him Classic tomorrow with the time and opponent to be determined.
